Looks like i'll be the first to post in this section...
Been using the Kathrein UFS 910 HD for the last 4-5 days now and i must say i am really impressed with this box of tricks.
First of all it works a treat on cardsharing, has a much more sensitive tuner than my old DM7020s and a far superior picture quality even on standard channels...The only downside i see at the moment which i am hoping will be fixed with next firmware upgrade is the lack of DISEqC 1.1 controls...
I would like to hear more from other users of this box...so c'mon lets get the ball rolling guys..

This is a strong competitor against the long-awaited Dreambox 8000 which is still not available & the UFS 910 is already available! This HD receiver boast DVB-S2 and MPEG-4 capability.

For the hobbyists amongst us this is a very interesting receiver, because it runs on Linux & has an Ethernet connector, so cardsharing is possible! There is already an alternative image available which can run cardsharing clients/SoftCAM emulators.

Sadly the specifications only mention DiSEqC 1.0 & not DiSEqC 1.2 which is required to drive a DiSEqC motor or a big DiSEqC swithc (>4 connections) Probably a future firmware upgrade will add DiSEqC 1.2 capability, because this only a software based feature.

The Kathrein UFS 910 HD receiver is available in black, or silver.

Specifications

· Reception of digital satellite TV and radio channels in the DVB-S & DVB-S2 transmission standards
· Video decoding of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 signals
· 16-digit alphanumeric display to show the channel names and programme information
· 4,000 channel memory positions
· Kathrein-easy-use EPG with timer programming
· Common Interface for two CA modules
· HDMI output for connection to an HDTV ready TV set
· HDCP copy protection
· Optical audio output for Dolby Digital data stream (AC 3)
· YPbPr output
· Cinch sockets for AV signal (composite colour picture, stereo-audio)
· One USB 2.0 port on the front panel & 2 USB 2.0 ports on the back panel for updates with a USB stick
· Multifunction setting device on the front panel
· Composite colour picture, RGB and Y/C signal output programmable on SCART socket
· Suitable for software updates (operational software & channel list separately) via satellite or USB stick . Language selection for programmes broadcast in several languages
· Channel search
· Channel position sort function
· Automatic date and time setting via DVB data stream
· On-screen display (OSD) in 8 languages (D, GB, F, I, E, CZ, NL, TR)
· DiSEqCTM 1.0 control signal and SCR one-cable system control signals (as of first quarter 2007)
· LINUX based operating system
· Mains switch
· Comes with: Remote control, batteries, manual, safety notes, SCART cable & power cable

Currently the UFS 910 is selling in Germany for around €300, other countries like the Netherlands can expect the receiver to be available arround September.

I must add the fact that this box does excellent High Definition recording on to any HDD connected through one of its three usb connectors...
You just connect up your external drive through usb and once the box formats the drive you can record anything on it..so simple, just plug & play.
The recorded material can be played back on your PC using many video players available on the net...I use latest version of PowerDVD..

Very interesting indeed. So at this moment if you want to update keys you would have to use an USB stick or can you do it via network and ftp?

That is a big plus, not to mention the other functions on it looks very tempting to get one on my next trip to Germany:cool:.

This is something that I lack on my Humax HDCI-2000:mad:. It does have a USB port, and in the hidden menus of the reciever, it does have a turned off function for use with a hard drive. Now if only Humax could update the receiver to work with a hard drive for recording....U-zzz

The main downside of this receive is that it cannot drive a motor...also, it has no card slots, so to use a legal card one will have to spend some money on a cam. So I hav gone off this one, especially as Kathrein have stated that they will not do anything for the motor. What a shame...

If you know a little bit of German than there is a nice comparison between the Kathrein, the Ferguson and humax HD.

DrHans has an interesting mini-review of the UFS910:

_http://drhans.jinak.cz/ufs910/

It's a nice box, but has some issues. If they were resolved, it would be far more tempting.

Kathrein Receivers.
Software.
We have some feedback from Kathrein suggesting the Diseqc 1.1 software revision will be out in about 5 weeks and that they are working on the Diseqc 1.2 software for a revision after that.
Cannot be exact about that time scale but the intention is to sort this as soon as they can.
It should be noted that the Kathrein is a worlds first achievement. It is the first ever high definition Linux receiver and so the fact that some software enhancements are still in the pipeline should be considered in that context.

Thx for the link....(had to register to view the photos tho)
Connecting an internal SATA HDD sounds like a good idea, unfortunately by the looks of it,there is no 5V supply to power the HDD inside the box.
External USB recording will have to do for now.

Very interested in this receiver.
Would be my first foray in Linux Sat receivers....and possibly card sharing.

But I need to buy one first!
Can anyone recommend a decent company, to get this receiver at a reasonable price?

Apparently some forums are working hard in solving the diseqc problem. They got some sort of complicated method at the moment here w.spinnes-board.de/vb/showpost.php?p=785203&postcount=1

Here is the better one - but it is in German only... but it is a good sign
w.spinnes-board.de/vb/showpost.php?p=785252&postcount=1

I guess it is only a matter of time...
