This September, ITV fans will get to enjoy almost three whole hours of Simon Cowell produced shows, as the man who is often referred to as “Mr. Angry” or “Mr. Nasty” seemingly takes over Saturday nights on ITV.
The broadcaster just confirmed that a new game show called Red or Black will be premiering on September 3[SUP]rd[/SUP]. Hosted by Ant & Dec, and set to air from Wembley Arena, the new game show's premier will be a special 75-minute episode. Shorter episodes will be broadcast throughout the week. Each of the seven episodes ends with 1 out of 7,000 contestants playing a live game of roulette in an attempt to win £1 million. The finalists have to go through several celebrity-filled challenges, and constantly have to choose between red or black.
After Red or Black premieres, next on ITV's schedule is an hour of The X Factor. This season sees a whole new panel of judges, including Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, and Kelly Rowland. The appeal of this new set of judges is yet to be determined, although the launch episode, which was screened at the O2 Arena saw plenty of fans. The more humble set of judges has also seemed to have encouraged hopefuls to give the show a try.
Gary Barlow, who is supposed to replace Simon Cowell's role, was asked if he'd be a better judge than his predecessor. Barlow responded with “Simon is the master. It's going to be a tough role to fill but we're all listening to what he's telling us.” His response implies that Cowell will still be calling the shots off-screen.
Following The X Factor is a half hour of Red or Black's results show, completing Cowell's block on ITV. September will also see Jonathan Ross' new chat show on the channel, as well as matches from the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and on Tuesday, the broadcaster will air a live match of England v Wales in the UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifiers.
It's sure to be a very entertaining September on ITV, with minor changes in the evening schedule each week in order to accommodate all their new programmes.
The question remains, however, will Cowell and ITV be able to turn a profit? Red or Black has a record £15 million budget, and Cowell has already called it one of his “biggest risks.” Perhaps because it's going up against BBC's Doctor Who and Channel 4's Million Pound Drop LIVE.
