Hi,

I live near London and have a 1.8m dish set up towards the 4.8E sirus satellite to get the viasat channels. The problem i am having is that i get 96-98% quality on all the normal channels however on HD channels, some which have the same frequency just a different polarisation i get 0% quality. To me it seems like it should work if you get that much signal strength on the same frequency but maybe i am wrong? I have tried tuning the dish but i cannot get any signal strength whatsoever on these HD channels. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong, other than the signal might not work in the UK? Could it be a faulty LNB or would this just cause all or none to work?

Any advice would be great

Thanks in advance

Just west of London in Bucks I can't get anything from SES5 on my 90cm but I would think a 1.8m would pull something in if you have it aligned properly. The further east you are the better the chances too.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I am just using the standard box Viasat give you, my dish is motorised and i have tried moving it slightly back and forth with no luck. I guess the best thing is to get someone to come and try to align it to the HD channels to see if they can help. I am down in Surrey so lightly east

I can pick up the Nordic beam here in Northern France reasonably easily on a Penta 85 with an Inverto Black Ultra. It may well be that the Viasat receiver doesn't have a very sensitive tuner but I would have thought a 1.8M dish would be more than ample.

A 1.8 will require far more precise alignment than a modest dish, but as others have said, it should be possible to succeed.

Hmm, either nordy250 and I are in a null or I need to go check my dish again when the weather improves. If you can get it in Northern France on an 85cm I should be able to get something at least just outside of London on a 90cm surely... Astra 4A Nordic comes in very strong though.

Hi,

So i got a guy to align it and now i can get 100% quality on all channels. Although it is very fragile with the alignement needing to be dead on or the signal goes to 0. Also replaced LNB and put new cabling in.

Thanks for peoples advice

Thanks for letting us know the successful outcome.

Just need to shelter it from the prevailing wind, now!

So if you are only getting it with a well aligned 1.8m it probably explains why I can't get anything at all on a 90cm in South Bucks...

Really? Hmm. What signal are you getting now? I know llew gets it in Cambridge on his 1.2m dish, Vipersan gets it in Manchester on his Triad 110 and I see about 3dB on my Fibo 120 in Bristol. It's weak but not THAT weak.

I know it's odd, but all this makes me think there is a bit of a dead spot this side of London.

It would be interesting to know if others can get SES5, perhaps we need to start making another map. ;) Not that I'm too worried at the moment as there's nothing on that satellite that I could decode anyway even if I could receive it.
