I'm guessing a car is out of the question and I'd need a trailer of some sort

Hi Fergy
If its a one piece dish ...and you cant get it inside a vehicle...
Then the only way I would consider transporting it is face down on a flat board ..
and tied well down or clamped ..
It wouldn't take much wind ..travelling at speed to catch and lift such a beast ..
t'would act like a giant windsail ..as I recently found out ..
Transporting it face down with curved hump upwards ..would allow air to travell over the back surace and help to push it down I think..

hello
take the lnb arm off.
is the dish is offset take the arm off and it will be flat.
two people place it on a station wagon or small truck lugage rack face down.
this way it will be flat
tie it down and drive slow 30 to 40 mph.
should be ok this way.

That would go on a Transit roof rack easily (6'6" = 2m and a Transit will fit through a 6'6" width restriction). I've got a Zafira and it would go on that and tie down to the roof bars but the overhang would be pretty big. The average car, something like a Ford Focus 7 seater is about 1.6m from the tip of the door mirror on one side to the tip of the door mirror on the other.

I did a job for a guy a little while ago and he put his 2.4m on top of a Nissan Vanette and tied it down with bungee straps. Later, on the motorway, it took off like a flying saucer.

"The dish it's self is in 1 piece, much better that way I find. It has already been took of it's mount for transport so is in 2 parts (dish and base)."

Doubt I could get hold of a van and probably not a roof rack. Would some sort of trailer work?

Depends on the dish. Depends on the car.

I took a 1.8m prime focus dish a thousand miles through France a few years ago. The car was a Montego estate but the key thing was that it had roof bars. I strapped the dish down hump upwards and didn't have an ounce of a problem. I was able to drive completely normally and cruised at 65mph on the autoroutes without trouble.

The LNB arms were inside the car of course!

Have a look in your local paper and see if there's a man with a van advertising, they don't normally charge too much and it would fit nicely in the back of a transit pickup.

Point well made CH ..
but I suspect the car wouldn't be travelling at speeds approaching lift off ..and tied down to a flat board ...air can't get under the dish itself ..
Nonetheless you are right ..
it would attept to lift a little ...certainly at extreme speeds..

personally i would hire a van . a dish is like a big sail . its likly to be windy the day you pick it up and it would be a nightmare to transport without getting out of shape.

Whats sats are you looking to get with this mate?

I would be very interested in your results once it is installed.

Good luck with the transportation.

p.s. Where are you getting the dish from.

I never really looked into it. Had a busy weekend, may check it's still available and sort something.

Nothing realy, it was free and fancied a clart.
