On the bench at the moment after the customer said it was dead (no lights).

Having removed the wayward screw that was rattling around under the motherboard, I've located a blown component Q528, that has the legend PF8AN and then FDS.

If there is any more wording then it has charred away.

So, does anyone have an idea which chip this is and if there is a direct replacement. It sits in the higher current part of the circuit and so I assume it was taken out when the screw bridged part of the board.

Thanks in advance

Crud...I just 86'ed a bunch of old laptop MB's a few weeks ago, several could have been from Compaq, now for that chip, it looks to be one made by Fairchild, (now made by ON semiconductor) but the part number looks to be burnt off, the other numbers are it's package SMD descriptive.

Here is a guide to their stuff
Code:
http://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/home.do

It could be a DC power MOSFET

If you look at the image, the other Fairchild chips have the same identification, which is why I was unsure any data was missing.

If they do/did have a contract with HP/Compaq then this might be the reason for witholding full part numbers,

I also have a few laptop Mobos from the same era, so far none I've checked over have a similar chipset.

If you go to the ON semi site and type in the FDS 8880 for the other chip that I can see, it will come up with that part, what your missing is the FDS 69XX number for that part.

Have you tried a google for any photos of that MB?

What is the model number of the laptop?

Well I found a ton of photos for that one, but none would blow up in good enough quality to see the parts, you know, it may be cheaper and a better idea to replace the MB totally, you don't know if something else is FUBAR due to the loose hardware.

Here is a start, but you should look for the exact MB part #.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

The best repair for a HP computer (yes, I know it's branded as a Compaq, it's still made by HP!!) is a swift blow with a hammer and tossing in the nearest bin... :)

From Yellowstone........685 miles as the lava fly's....But I worry a bit more about Long Valley.....its only 75 miles from me and I would be under several feet of hot lava or several dozen feet of hot ash.

I'm within the ash fallout zone for Yellowstone, but I have freinds about 45 miles from it, I have been watching the EQ maps for anything possible.

We call them compactor food...As I said above I had some Compaq MB's here but sent them to the recyclers after stripping all the gold off them, over the years I have recovered about 2 OZ of gold and a 1/2 OZ of other rare Earth elements, this takes a lot of MB's and other electronic scrap to make up that much, and you need to know what to look for and how to separate it from the base metals.

Copper is another collectable, #2 scrap copper is about $2.00 a pound, (depending on market values) but if you strip it down and melt it into bars it can be called #1 copper and that can range from around $2.25 to $3.25 a pound depending on market.

MOBO arrived (looking good)

Installed (looking good)

Powered up, no POST messages.

On top of this the board has no position for a 3V cell battery, but neither did the faulty one. First time I've seen that.

Seem to remember the CMOS backup is sometimes provided by an RTC module? Just a thought

They do have a CMOS battery, it's not on the board but should be there and plugged in, it's somewhere under the facia that goes around the keyboard from memory.
