My Satellite Setup
3 Dishes (hotbird/Badr-3, Nilesat) Into Televes 9x8 Diseqc swtich Modulated Via Channel Plus to multiple ports. Receivers 2x Dreambox DM500S 1xAFN Decoder 1XTechnosat
Lim200HD Media Player (GenDVD.com) into 2 Visionman 3TB Raid servers w/Microsoft
My Location
Kuwait-Working (US Origin)
I have been here in Kuwait for 3 years and after 10 different techs and God only knows how many receivers, I decided to get involved and set up my Sat system. I ran quad shield everywhere terminated with Snap'n'seal compressive fittings. I fired up the DM500s using Gemini and they work great and I have a great signal but I can never get my setup right to include all transponders/programming. Hotbird transponders come in no problem; its bader3 and nilesat that are kickin my butt...

I have 3 sats I am trying to receive but only a 8x8 Powered Diseqc multiswitch is avaialble. So I have to figure out how to get my Hotbird / Badr 3 / Nilesat channels (12 lnb's worth of transponders onto 8 inputs) Good news is that Arabic is useless to me as the only thing I understand is goodnight. The English channels are available with only 2 transponders of Nilesat and 2 of Badr 3.

Apparently the English programming is the Orbit Package and THe SHowtime package located on Bader 3 and Niles Sate respectively.

So on the inputs of the Televes Diseqc powered switch I am running all 4 outputs of the HOTBIRD LNB into the first 4 (LNB 0) inputs. That one works fine.

From all I have read, I need Badr3 Low Horizontal and High Horizontal for English (Orbit) Programming. I put those to lnb's into position 5 and 6 on the switch.

I also understand that Nilesat High Horizontal and High Vertical are needed for the English (Showtime) PAckage so I put those two onto position 7 and 8 of the switch.

Then I got to SAT config in the DM500S setup (as displayed in attached pic). Hotbird is easy to config (at least it works as config):
LNB 0
22kh on/off
Voltage H/L
Lnb Parameter A/A (I have no Idea what this does but A/A works)

How would one configure the other LNB's?
I need both Nilesat High Transponders;
I need Badr 3 Low Horz & High Horz;

1. I have no idea regarding settings under "LNB configuration"
2. Is Lyngsat the best resource to determine most current transponder/programming data?
3. Is there an easy way to rid myself of all the non-english and repeat programs (some with a "!" in front of the name)?

Any assistance would be appreciate. Thank you-

Chris

Welcome to the forum chrisnia

That's a mighty fine setup if I may say so. It is hardly your Mr average configuration. As you are from the States perhaps your terminology is slightly different, however if I am reading your post correctly are you saying you are using quattro lnb's as in some ways if you are this will complicate matters for you. If you were using standard universal lnb's the configuration would be easier and there would be less inputs for the switch to handle.

Best up to date well take your pick

lyngsat flysat or kingofsat

Whilst this forum is primarily a hobby forum there are some professional installers who post here on a regular basis who should be able to assist you if you are not in a hurry

Thank you for the quick reply. I had to use the 4 output lnb's as I am going into a multiswitch. I was initially running 6 sat boxes and needed the multiswitch. Additionally, I did not want to split the signal at all due to prior experiences with low signal strength. It appears that 58-64 is the typical signal strength that installers here accomplish with cheap chinese single shield foam coax on 100' runs teminated with a connector you can buy 100 for $1....

SO in my desire to get over 90 signal strength and modulate and distribute to all tvs in the villa, I went with a multiswitch and 4 port lnb's.

I just went back up on the roof (yes, at 4am) and took a pic of the nilesat LNB (just 2 portsin use) and the Hotbird lnb (all 4 ports used)

If anyone understands the config in the DM500S LNB setup screens I would appreciate it.

Oh, regarding the "mighty fine setup up" ...never underestimate what material posessions a willingness to get shot at can provide :)...Sad thing is, I can seem to get it to work right..:)

Hi chrisnia,

Yes, great setup,

Sorry to be brief but.

So thats 3 satellites and 3 receivers.

So can't you use :

3 quad (switched) LNBs
3 4x1 DiSEqC switches.

or a multiswitch with more inputs.

Maybe I'm missing something..:)

EDIT:-

To do it the way you want to do it you are going to have to really hack about with the switching a little in the setup.

Badr- low H and High H
Nilsat High H and Low V

Your problem is that you have two High H's,
You need a High V.

You will need to fool the receiver in to selecting the High V output instead of the High H output for one of the sats. This could be done by changing the H to a V in the transponder List, unless there is another way.

Hey Robbo,

Thanks for the reply. I have 3 sats in one location and 3 sats in another for a total of 6. So I need the multiswitch. After and 8 x 8 multiswitch, they make a 16x16 which is not available here and would cost over $350 to order in.

What I need is to understand how to use the Diseqc commands to let a diseqc compatible receiver to use the only 2/4 outputs of the badr3 sat lnb and 2/4 outputs of the nilesat lnb. Thoe hotbird lnb is easy as it is connected normally to the first 4 inputs of the multiswitch.

SO in summary the multiswitch has 8 inputs and I have connected them as folllows:

Multiswitch Input...................Connected to:

LNB1 VERT LOW ....................HOTBIRD LNB VERT LOW
LNB1 HORZ LOW ...................HOTBIRD LNB HORZ LOW
LNB1 VER HIGH .....................HOTBIRD LNB VERT HIGH
LNB1 HORZ HIGH....................HOTBIRD LNB HORZ HIGN
LNB2 VERT LOW ....................BADR 3 LNB HORZ LOW
LNB2 HORZ LOW ...................BADR3 LNB HORZ HIGH
LNB2 VER HIGH .....................NILESAT LNB HORZ LOW
LNB2 HORZ HIGH ...................NILESAT LNB HORZ HIGH

The setup for the Badr3 and Nilesat is based on the information from Lyngsat that the English programming is on only 2 of the 4 transponders for both Badr3 and Nilesat. SO in theory if I can figure the Diseqc/LNB settings on the Dreambox and technosat settings, everything will work fine. My problem is when I get to the setup page I hacen't a clue on things like:

LNB low of low frequency,
LNB threshold frequency
Toneburst
Voltage
A/A, B/B, A/B etc

Does anyone understand the diseqc settings to tell the receiver that it has 3 satellites and to search only the lnb's specified. (all 4 of hotbird and 2 badr3 and 2 nilesat)?

I need the multiswitch becuase I have a total of 6 reaceivers to include 2 Dm500s, 1 AFN (Armed forces Network), 1 technosat, Orbit Decoder box (no cam), and 1 DM7020 I won off ebay (user "Chrisnia")

Thanks guys; sorry for the headache, your help is sincerely appreciated.

I thought you wanted both Nilesat High transponders?

i.e Vertical High and Horizontal High.

The voltage controls the polarisation,
12.5V to 14.5V for vertical and 15.5V to 18V for horizonal. Although on the receiver it may just be V or H.

The 22 kHz tone controls the band,
Tone OFF for Lo band (9.75GHz LO)
Tone ON for Hi band (10.6 GHz LO)

The toneburst should be set to off I believe.

Have a look at this wonderful guide:-

http://www.satellites.co.uk/satelli.../107907-up-8-lnbs-your-dreambox-pictures.html

Nothing like what you want to do, but much of the settings regarding Freq threshold, and what the A/B etcs mean are there.

I suspect that you will want A/A and A/B for the two input groups. These are DiSEqC 1.0 settings.

Robbo:)

Thanks Robbo,

I have been on KingofSat trying to find which transponders contain the english programming for Nilesat and Badr3. The initial thought that they were all on the high bands for both nilesat and badr3 was incorrect. Some of the programming (Orbit) is on badr3 low. Anyway I am off to the link you sent. I appreciate your help.

One quick (And probably easy) question; once you download the "ini" file containing a sat's transponder listings; e.g.:

>>>>>
[SATTYPE]
1=0130
2=Hotbird 6/7A/8 (13°E)

[DVB]
0=103
1= 0,H,27500,,DVB-S
2= 0,V,27500,,DVB-S
3=10719,V,27500,34,DVB-S
4=10723,H,29900,34,DVB-S
5=10758,V,27500,34,DVB-S
6=10775,H,28000,34,DVB-S
7=10796,V,27500,34,DVB-S
8=10829,H,3333,34,DVB-S
9=10834,V,27500,34,DVB-S
<<<<<

Where on the DM500 do you enter that information using the DCC software?

Thanks again :)

If you don't get a response here it may be worth asking a question about DCC in the Dreambox section (I don't use it so can't help you). There are also complete channel lists available e.g. PET123 that you can update your Dreambox with using DreamboxEdit.

The attached doc may (or may not help) with your LNB issues.
