Nope, not just a BMW thing - You obviously haven't seen the M4/M40 (and probably other motorways and dual carriage ways around London) outside rush hours ("everything" crawls then) on "work days" - especially if "someone" is on his way to a meeting and thinks he's going to be late. Say I doing "around 80" in the outside lane (which I "might" be:) ) and then this big beemer/rangie/merc (or a private hire long wheelbase Audi A6/A8!) comes charging up behind and tail-gates me - what do I/you do? No question - get out of the way before he drives over me/you! They all have advanced satnavs/camera warning kit, and they don't get stopped by the cops because there almost aren't any on those roads! PS: I could hang on to those guys up to about 120 (motor has been very well remapped!) if I wanted to but I can't afford the fines/extra insurance costs - although I do occasionally have a little fun with them by "letting them eat my dust" (it's a non-DPF diesel!) for a mile or so :)
