Another heap of BBC MW tx closures over the next few weeks - (the first two are due off today 6/5/21):

R Ulster 873 / 1341 kHz
R Cambridgeshire 1026kHz
R H&W 738 / 1584kHz
R Lancashire 855kHz
R Essex 792 / 765kHz
R Stoke 1503kHz
R Sheffield 1035kHz
R Leeds 774kHz
R Devon 801 / 990 kHz


And these two are having their service area reduced

R Gloucestershire 1413kHz
R Wales 657 / 882kHz

We’ll be able to hear RNE Barcelona loud and clear at night here once BBC H&W clears off 738, rather than just quietly in the background...

I found it’s possible to hear Enniskillen on 873 at night here too, now most other stuff (BBC Norfolk, AFN Europe) have gone off there. Will have to check to see if I can hear the recorded message loop.

Ive just heard part of the R Foyle announcement loop on 792kHz, but there is a lot of co-channel on the Ulster frequencies & its too cold to sit in the car very long! Caroline 648kHz coming in nicely!

On east coast of Ireland I have heard the loops on 1026, 738, 1584 and 855. 1026 is difficult because of Downtown Radio from Belfast on the same frequency.

Radio Stoke 1503kHz is reported to have been taken off air & switched to the tuning info loop mid morning today (24May)

774kHz R Leeds was cut to the retune info loop on schedule on June 1st. The R Devon closures seem to have been temporarily postponed. No info yet on the R Glocestershire closure which was due 7th June


657kHz R Wales went to the retune loop on June 9th, the 882Khz frequerncy is reported to have just started interrupting programmes with an announcement rather than the full switch off.

Ex ILR 1170 Swansea Sound has been shut down the last couple of days. Always a difficult catch for me down in Cannock when MW dxing in the 1980s.

All Absolute Radio (ex Virgin1215) frequencies are to be turned off by the end of January. Frequencies affected are 1215 / 1197 / 1233 / 1242 / 1260 khz.

I'm guessing Gold from Saffron Green north of London! I don't think there's any closure plans for that one yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it closes at some point

Its certain to close in the near future - MW listening has fallen off a cliff in recent years & its not commercially viable to keep old transmitters going which cost a fortune to run in electricity when they are only being used by a few thousand listeners.

I believe Saffron is on it's last set of antenna filters after the complex was struck by lightning a couple of years ago.

Rodscha could get Transnistria once it is retired.
