Barnes angered by Lampard booing

Ex-England international John Barnes says it is "wrong" for fans to boo midfielder Frank Lampard.

Chelsea midfielder Lampard, 29, came off the bench during England's 3-0 Euro 2008 qualifying win over Estonia and was targeted by some England fans.

Barnes, who was booed during his career with the national side, told BBC Radio 5live's Sportsweek: "It is just wrong.

"This is not a healthy situation either for Frank or for the team. It doesn't help him or the other players."

Barnes was subjected to plenty of criticism during his England career, which spanned 12 years and won him 79 caps.

He believes the boos directed at Lampard will have a negative effect on some of the other England players as well as the former West Ham star.

Barnes added: "Frank is an England player and we all want England to do well, the problem is this sort of thing does transmit to the rest of the side.

I feel it's gone far enough now. His been dropped, he knows he'll have to work hard to get his place back, what more do the boo-boys want? Lampard shouldn't be in the starting XI, but give him a chance to show he has something to offer.

Lampard has been poor, but one player I just do not understand getting booed is Phil Neville. So his card is marked for eternity because of the Portugal game in Euro 2000, is that it?! He does a very good job at what he does, and if memory serves me correctly it wasn't long ago that Phil had to service the whole of the left wing as Lampard, who was meant to be on the left, was AWOL again.

This is where I am sure others will disagree with me but :-

If those 'Fans' are not there to support the team (meaning everyone) and booing is not supporting a team in my opinion then the stewards should have the power to eject them and ban them from future games, if they do not take any action it will just continue. It is really just unpatriotic and should be treated as such..... 400 years ago their heads would have been on tower gate

People wonder why it is near impossible to get someone to agree to take the England manager's job and why some players have now removed themselves from England availability.

So the pack mentality.....Is that a bit like the pantomime mentality where the actor shouts Oh yes he did from the stage and the audience not knowing what the hell is going on cos their having their mince pies shout back Oh no he didn't?

Or is it more like the leemings all jumping over the cliff edge because the first one did?

Can you decide if they are leemings or pantomime audience? or perhaps they are just mindless hooligans who have not enough brain cells between them to understand the consequences of their actions?

I agree there are some moronic football supporters, when asked by Ian Wright on the radio today why he was booing, on supporter said, "Because he isn't good enough to be in the team", well that makes it OK to boo your own player then.
