Hello, I am new to this forum, so please be patient! I've a big sat digital box receiver in Spain. The current programmes I receive are are bad quality and very often breaking up and pointless watching it. A friend of mine told me if I can change the satellite to one that receives Norweigan televison, the one that is used for the troops based in Afghanistan. Can anyone help and tell me what satellite is used and how to do this. Many thanks Dawn

Hello

Welcome to the forum Dawn

The information you have given is somewhat vague so I can only assume you are referring to Thor 5/6 & Intelsat 10-02 at 0.8°West. However there is little or no free viewing apart from Digitv which is currenty opening with keys. Please let us know more details as apart from Digitv there is almost nothing worth watching for free or are you intending purchasing a subscription to something. Personally I have no knowledge of what the troops watch in Afghanistan...

Hi, Thanks for that. We only require the basic channels, so will this be OK? We are currently receiving tv through a company that only tranmits the free stations. The quality is terrible, and a friend of ours is having her television via a Norweighan satellite, she said most of the stations they receive are english speaking and gets BBC, ITV etc, and they are much better signals. Not sure if that helps, I'm not very technical! Thanks Dawn

To the best of my knowledge the BBC and ITV channels are only transmitted from Astra 28.2/5 unless one of the illegal pirate re-broadcast systems is being used and as you say you are in Spain this could well be the case, perhaps the company name would help give us a clue, however your profile contradicts Spain saying UK, this information needs to be correct in order to help you.

I suggest you get your friend to give you a list of the stations she receives and post it here so that we can tell from that. Your problem is that there is very poor reception in parts of Spain of the UK freesat channels which are intended for reception by the UK and hence they are tightly focussed on the UK.

What size dish do you currently have?

Sounds like both systems are their "illegal" rebroadcast systems. Many Scandinavian channels are also available, along with UK channels, on one or two of the rebroadcast systems. They will definately not be coming from satellite, but a local rebroadcast terrestrial mast. Maybe ask your neighbour who she pays each month for channels that are free via satellite!

As mentioned the UK BBC Channels are free to air with no subscription or viewing card on one satellite and one satellite only, and in certain areas of Spain you may need a 2.4m dish to receive them.

You could mean the British Armed Forces Network, but the card to unlock these channels is only available to servicing personell (i gather).
