Really....? While I am happy with Sky's HD output, I would rather they converted even more channels to HD (such as minority Discovery channel varieties) first.

That link is over a year old, I personally don't think it will be long, I already have 4k capabilities on my mobile phone,

Expect Sky and BT to launch new 4K boxes sooner rather than later
http://www.engadget.com/2015/02/02/bt-sky-4k-set-top-boxes/

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are finally ready to bring 4K movies to your home theatre
http://www.techhive.com/article/292...-to-bring-4k-movies-to-your-home-theater.html

4k Tata sky Ultra HD Box
https://www.komparify.com/tatasky-4k-ultra-hd-box-roi-stb?scheme=https

Even though I have not viewed any 4k, the tv must upscale the picture quality is far greater than my other 2 HD tvs, it will be an interesting few months, my prediction sky will make an announcement in the coming months.

I imagine most TVs by now are capable of displaying 1080p60. As a stop gap they could theoretically launch a kind of advanced HD sports service (with low compression), but boxes aren't capable and would probably confuse consumers too much.

Have they actually decided on a standard yet for UHD? I remember my sister bought a flat screen TV that couldn't do Full HD, analogue only receiver and didn't even have HDMI connections so are next to useless now unless you have a box with component output. I guess that was the price for being an early adopter. I'm quiet happy with my mid range Sony TV (DVB-T2) I bought a few years ago and have no plans to upgrade until the BBC, C4, etc, launch free UHD channels. I think I might be in for quite a wait...

Blimey I hadnt noticed the link was over a year old :D

However the points the chap makes about the extra costs for the broadcasters for absolutely no advantage for them still stands.

New technology sometimes gets swept aside in favour of simple solutions we had Quadrophonic sound in the early 70's even BBC Radio 3 broadcast in Quadrophonic the receivers were enormous with a joystick for sound balance between the 4 channels :) they appear on e-bay occasionally despite the lack of Quadrophonic broadcasts ?
Dolby B & C followed in the late 70's sounding the end of Quadrophonic Radio

Now we have a new dilemma in broadcasting with Super HD TV  with the failure of 3D tv to take off big time with the general public ;)
I know a lot of people who have HD tv with 40" tv screens that are happy to watch BBC & ITV in SD o_O SHD has little chance of making it with small screens were HD is more than adequate,

Radio sadly seems to have become a poorer medium since the rise of digital radio in the guise of Dab MP-2 in the UK the new Medium Wave,
Dab+ in MP-3 & WMA used in the rest of the World including Europe & Australia is far superior to Dab but is not as good as it could be,
VHF/FM used in the UK with a good outside aerial is far superior to the current Dab transmissions in the UK,

Dab when it 1st started in the UK by the BBC thought that MP2 in 192 Kbps was as good as it gets thus landing us in the UK with the worse digital radio system on planet Earth
Stations that started in stereo @ 128 Kbps within 2 years reverted to 64Kbps in mono  this in my opinion is like Colour TV reverting to Black & White as it is cheaper to broadcast,

I really am very sceptical of the future of broadcasting in this country with commercial interests in lower quality maximum profits with 20+ tv channels per satellite transponders & loads of 64Kbps mono radio channels in what used to be public medium that we used to be the World leader in high quality broadcasting.

I know ive just bought a tv, I didn't buy it for the ultra/4k, at the end of the day its a nice 42 inch tv but not only that, its a computer a smart tv ip streamer satellite top box Terrestrial top box etc etc etc,

For £450 its worth every penny, you could pay nearly that for a vu plus twin tuner, most of the stuff I watch is old viewing anyhow I do like gadgets though :).

Let's face it, £450 is not a lot of money for a UHD TV.... Heck, it's not a lot of money for a good HD TV! Exactly 10 years ago I spent £500 for a 28" Sony trinitron crt TV. My problem comes when companies try to flog you a tv costing many thousands of pounds - and something that is currently (really) still in development.

I had the same thing with my Sony TV, it came enabled for 3D even though I've not got a 3D bluray player or the glasses...

Yeah my parents are those people. Drives me mad. What's worse is they even watch Sky HD through the RF modulator rather than via HDMI. First thing I do if I join them to watch something and they are watching the fuzzy TV with hissing on the audio is switch it to the proper input and they mutter something about me being a perfectionist. :-doh

..yet another standard ? ;)

http://japandailypress.com/nhk-to-b...h-definition-tv-broadcasting-in-2016-0720933/

NHK to begin ‘Super Hi-Vision’ high-definition TV broadcasting in 2016 8K is only months away from start up

NHK Japan’s national television broadcaster, has revealed plans to begin transmissions in 2016 using the new Super Hi-Vision format, which features a resolution 16 times higher than the current HDTV standards. Having been in development in part by NHK for the last few years, the 7,680 pixels by 4,320 pixels resolution was given its first trial broadcast during last summer’s London Olympics.

Has that been developed to the point where it will start transmissions? The article dates from 2013 and I wonder if 4K is now the 'thing', though I see the resolution of the above is greater...

My Mum has a Sky+ HD box...she likes to watch her regional news....and neither of the ITV or BBC ones are (yet) in HD...so she just watches SD as she can't see the point of changing channels..
