New technology sometimes gets swept aside in favour of simple solutions we had Quadrophonic sound in the early 70's even BBC Radio 3 broadcast in Quadrophonic the receivers were enormous with a joystick for sound balance between the 4 channels
they appear on e-bay occasionally despite the lack of Quadrophonic broadcasts ?
Dolby B & C followed in the late 70's sounding the end of Quadrophonic Radio
Now we have a new dilemma in broadcasting with Super HD TV
with the failure of 3D tv to take off big time with the general public ;)
I know a lot of people who have HD tv with 40" tv screens that are happy to watch BBC & ITV in SD
SHD has little chance of making it with small screens were HD is more than adequate,
Radio sadly seems to have become a poorer medium since the rise of digital radio in the guise of Dab MP-2 in the UK the new Medium Wave,
Dab+ in MP-3 & WMA used in the rest of the World including Europe & Australia is far superior to Dab but is not as good as it could be,
VHF/FM used in the UK with a good outside aerial is far superior to the current Dab transmissions in the UK,
Dab when it 1st started in the UK by the BBC thought that MP2 in 192 Kbps was as good as it gets thus landing us in the UK with the worse digital radio system on planet Earth
Stations that started in stereo @ 128 Kbps within 2 years reverted to 64Kbps in mono
this in my opinion is like Colour TV reverting to Black & White as it is cheaper to broadcast,
I really am very sceptical of the future of broadcasting in this country with commercial interests in lower quality maximum profits with 20+ tv channels per satellite transponders & loads of 64Kbps mono radio channels in what used to be public medium that we used to be the World leader in high quality broadcasting.
