2 Questions for the tech guys...
I recently had some building work done and I removed a 26" LCD from the wall and placed it "Somewhere safe" but the builders managed to put some of their stuff on top of it and shattered the screen.....When I turn it on it has a huge spider web type pattern and a large black blob with a black crack going halfway up the screen...
I'm covered by Currys homecare plan and left it with them this evening to assess. My questions are (1)Do you guys think it can be repaired? I'd rather it can't as it was 4 years old..At the time it was quite expensive at 800 Euro..And (2) will Currys offer me a TV to the value of 800 Euro?

Hi Gandalf ...
Put simply ..
No.
Its simply not an economic repair ..
The cost of a replacement lcd panel plus labour charges would come to more than the cost of a comparable TV ..
If you are insured for accidental damage ..you will most likely be offered a replacement TV .

I agree, the cost of an LCD replacement panel plus fitting would be more than the cost of a replacement TV..... simply because the prices have fallen so much and yet labour charges have gone up

And, if you aren't adequately insured, make a claim against the Builder's Insurer.

Hi Gandalf ..
Just as a bit of extra info you might find useful..
IF ..you get a replacement tv ...and your old one is left for you to dispose of ..
you can make a fair bit of cash out of its carcass ..
An LCD TV consists basically of 4 main components..
The Power supply board
The Invertor /backlight drive board
The Main board (cpu and signal processing)

and the lcd panel which has a small driver board mounted on the rear of the panel ..
All of these component boards are easily removed ..and will command a reasonable 'salvage' price on Ebay ..
Typically a power board or invertor will go for anything between 35 and 70 quid ..depending on its rarity..
Both engineers and diy types will buy these to repair a faulty TV ...as many boards are deliberately priced by the manufacturer too high to make repairs economic..
Some are not even available to buy after just 18 months ..
..again a deliberate attempt by the manufacturer to get joe public to part with more of their 'hard earned'
I am a strong advocate for recycling these 'useful' boards ...
Its greener and better for everyones pocket.
Be under no illusions the Govt would much rather you spend ..spend..spend ...even whilst they spout Green Rhetoric from their soap boxes.
Two faced doesn't begin to describe them.

Just to reinforce my arguement for this type of recycling
Try typing 'lcd tv inverter' into Ebays search bar
here is a typical item for sale:-

I found it the biggest possible waste of money I have ever come across, perhaps CH agrees.

Recently bought a replacement clothes dryer as the other one expired, was offered homecare at about £80.00 per year after three years of not paying I could afford a new one anyhow if it did go wrong so why bother.

I know it does work for some people especially on very expensive items....I just do not buy expensive items so not for me

The consumer boards are awash with people that are in dispute with them. Google 'Coverplan' and 'Dixons' or 'Currys' to find out.

Curry's Homecare (snigger)

I see now why the snigger CH..Got my letter from coverplan yesterday and all I was offered was 399 euro for a TV which cost me 899 pounds (pre euro days) + 250 for a 5 year coverplan...wasn't a happy camper I can tell you and let Currys know that too but in the end they would not budge from the amount they offered saying they only replace to the same spec not same value....in the end I had to settle for what was given...moral of this story is as has been said..coverplan not worth a crap stay clear..the ironic part of this is,I picked up a new telly with my vouchers and the manager who dealt with me had the balls to ask if I wanted to take out an extended warranty on the TV :-rofl2
