Channel 4 is to launch a new station on the digital TV service Freeview, to replace the phone-in station Quiz Call.

A spokeswoman for the broadcaster could not confirm details of the channel, but dismissed reports that it would simply move its More4+1 service to Freeview.

Channel 4 recently sold its interactive TV business to iTouch, which provides voting services for Big Brother.

The company will continue to broadcast Quiz Call on satellite and cable after it leaves Freeview on 15 November.

Imitators

Earlier this year, Channel 4 relaunched its film channel, Film4, as a free service, resulting in a large increase in viewers.

Its digital channels also include the entertainment-based E4 and factual station More4.

The broadcaster was the first in the UK to launch a dedicated competition TV channel when Quiz Call was launched last year.

Despite initial success, Channel 4 says the "opportunity to generate significant profits from call-in TV has passed" as the market is flooded with imitators.

A spokeswoman said the broadcaster was considering "a number of quite exciting" options to replace Quiz Call.
