Compaq FP5315 Monitor

I have had two of these for about 5 years now but a while ago my daughters began playing up and displaying a white screen intermittently. I swapped it out with mine and put my refurbished Dell to good use, but I had to dig out my USB speakers to make up for the Compaq which has integral speakers, although crappy, they suffice for my needs.

Decided to strip it down even though I promised myself I was not going to do anymore ad hoc repairs. It was obvious the main cause was yet again swollen capacitors on the power board. Catching things early reduced the knock on effect and I just had to replace:-

2 X 1000uF 16V
5 X 470 uF 16V

Result is I am please to report she's up and running :-thumb1

It's nice when something is so easy to fix. Me - I'm trying find a power MOSFET (locally) to fix the fan control module on my C5. I've not priced the module from the Citroen stealer but I suspect it'd be hundreds of pounds.

Fan control module??? In the old days, that was called a thermostat!!!

I presume it's for the radiator?

No, it's to control the speed of the heater fan.

In the old days a selection of resistors would have done the job - now the air-con computer "tells" the module what speed to run the fan at!

Rip it all out and rebuild it with proper components that won't crash...

Speaking of which, I just built a 12vDC (or thereabouts) PSU from a dead 2.1 speaker system's 12vAC PSU, a few diodes (to act as a rectifier) and a capacitor, and it works...

The original MOSFET is STW80NF55-08 which, apparently, is difficult to source in the UK. The chap who told me about this used an IRF3205VPBF which he got from RS. Unfortunately I don't know anyone around here with an RS account and none of the people I normally deal with have either of these or anything really close.

I did look all this up yesterday at work but, from memory, the working current has to be at least 80A, the voltage 55 or more and the RDS a very low 0.008Ω or less. The original MOSFET is TO247 and the replacement a TO220.

Fear not I have an account Paul however be aware that carriage is £5.00 minimum with RS.

I think more detail is required e.g. is it N channel, P channel, jfet, certainly that sort of amperage it is beefy TO247 package

Unfortunately, despite much looking around, I can't find the IRF3205VPbF anywhere on the RS site.

Anyway, I've printed out the spec sheets for both of the MOSFETS and summarise them as follows:


STW80NF55-08 TO-247 N-Channel 55 Volt 80 Amp 0.0065Ω (Typ) 0.008Ω (Max) Rdgs
IRF3205VPbF TO-220 N-Channel 55 Volt 110 Amp 0.008Ω (Max) Rdgs

I think that the very low Rdgs value is quite important, I found a IXTP110N055P which might do the job but it has a typical/maximum resistance of 11/13.5 mΩ. It dooes have the advantage that it can bought singly - I wouldn't have to buy a minimum quantity of 50!
