I guess that it isn't surprising, I know he has his detractors, but overall I believe he has been good for the team, the captainship certainly matured him as a player and person.

I can remember how I felt about him after the famous sending off incident, but all credit to the guy, he worked hard, ignored the derision for nearly a year and came out of it a better person.

Sorry to see him go, but we do have a couple of other players suitable for the job, not the least John Terry or Steve Gerrard. :)

I can only see Steven Gerrard getting it - giving to a defender may not be the best idea after this World Cup. As has been said, this give McLaren the freedom to blood Lennon into the starting line-up.

For me, it is always going to be Garry Neville. Straight forward , no nonsence, 10 years solid at the back, no stupid wife, no silly haircut, not too young - perfect. After England win the 2008 European Cup he can retire and maybe Terry can be the one after him.

Becks has been outstanding for England this tournament and this is a decision taken on a moment of distress.

He really has steppen up for England this time and put up consistent performances all the way. Maybe it was a good thing he came out yesterday and didn't get the chance to miss a penalty like 2 years ago.

I don't find that surprising at all, I have not been one of those who thought that them winning was a foregone conclusion, too many variables in this type of competition.

Doesn't matter how much individual flair your team has, if they don't work in perfect unison, a lesser side will beat them. Greece did not have a great team of individuals in the European championship, but they played as a team and it worked against the teams of superstars. Having said that, the French team had a lot of talent and finally got things together. :)
