A customer has one of these

http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/inspiron-one-19/pd

(their version does not have the webcam though)

It's gone wrong, specifically the power supply - a simple single 18volt output SMPS running at over 6A delivery has failed, and I've already taken out and replaced the two electolytics that look and weigh less than they should (two 820uF's in tandem).

There is one company supplying a repair kit, but it is from the US

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Repair-Kit-Dell-W01B-LCD-Monitor-Capacitors-Only-Not-the-Entire-Board-/330745156651

I would normally order the kit, however it's going to cost almost £30 to get it here before the end of next weekend. I would prefer to get this turned around before the weekend is over as the client is pushing (and this machine is taking up a lot of space)

Does anyone else know what is likely to have gone before I plug her back in ?

I may even resort to a full replacement power supply but the two I can find are already second hand and £100 a go. Cheaper to fit an external supply, which is what I've recommended, seeing how the dust has already clogged up the fan intakes almost completely inside two years of operation.

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it's the correct power supply? This site seems to think it should be 19.5v.

How strange. I can't see how an external power supply could be an alternative to an internal one.

And yet another variation on voltage - 19v.

That psu is dead simple. It'd be a lot quicker, cheaper and easier to check the individual components and replace the faulty parts.

I've already gone as far as I want to in terms of time as per the first post.

If I start dismantling it to check more components then it would cost the client more than a replacement supply, and I still have the issue with the dust doing what it did before. I would expect integral PSUs to last more than three years.

It should be easy enough, there is only one supply voltage and the on/off switch is a 'soft' one so the internal power supply is actually 'on' all the time. All I have to do is replace the connector with the block type attached to the old one (though I will probably blag a four way connector from another standard chassis supply, then source the electrolytics for the Chicony in my own time.
