My Panasonic DVD outputs multichannel sound but has to be routed through the TV to gain the benefit. The Philips TV has the necessary decoders built in and 5.1 speaker set up. The difficulty I had is that the DVD outputs an optical digital signal whilst the TV has a coax digital input (2 in fact). Purchased a nice little coverter box, mains powered and the two connection leads for a total of £34. Works brilliantly so if anyone else needs has a similar set up.....there you go.
