Another bit of mystery and intrigue, on a long weekend in Paris for a relative's wedding and was up the Eiffel Tower yesterday and on one leg pointing towards the middle of the structure was this baby

This dish is not a satellite one, this is a point to point link between the Eiffel Tower and a Romainville TV tower, this is a part of the backup security system for French TV.

here is one on the top of the C&A building in Paris, not sure but looked like a 2.80mtr from ground level

This dish is a part of the old Eutelsat headquarters dish farm in Paris, before Eutelsat move outside Paris is Headquarters was located in the Montparnasse tower where the C&A is located to.

Not really on holiday, but spotted this in South Shields whilst driving past.

Anybody want to hazard a guess on the dish size and what sat it is focused on.

Trying to account for the perspective, and comparing AZ and EL (bearing in mind the Sly dishes are Offset), I'd go for 26E. Doesn't seem to be suffciently westward to be for 7W or for Nordic beams on 1W or 4.8E.

I just got back from a holiday in the Maldives. The resort had an interesting dish farm, mainly C-band by the looks of things and certainly more dishes than required for the channels on offer. Channels where piped to every villa on the island via analogue UHF to LCD TVs. Each villa had their own wifi access point too but although it was free it was really slow.

Hehe, I thought of you!! Being stuck on a small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean I was grateful to have internet at all since mobile internet was £75 for 10MB on T-Mobile.

Ouch!

I've only once been tempted to take my Netbook on holiday, but bowed to the superior wisdom of SWMBO ("No. No. No")!

I would guess by the ping time that it's satellite Internet. Gamers need not apply!

I did think the same at first but the ping time seemed to vary a lot, but was never less than about 400ms. The connection was supplied by Dhiraagu Telecom according to the main Speedtest.net site which are the main telecoms firm in the country but since the country is just made up of hundreds of small islands it must have its challenges. I did notice a few ground links between the islands on the mobile masts.

I even found an underwater cable while snorkelling, but no idea what it was for but it seemed to be heading for a neighbouring island. The sad thing is I was more excited by this then the colourful fish around it.
