@steffan_st:

Many thanks for sharing these very rare pictures. I always wondered how many people in Mongolia practice satellite reception. I wonder what they can receive there except eastern russian and chinese beams. Theoretically in the capital Ulan Bataar 30.5E-180E are above the horizon !!

Glad you appreciate the pics!

In fact the city of Ulan Bataar is a disaster.
Very poor people, lot's of slum and alcoholism,it makes me very sad to see that in such a beautiful country geographically speaking.People were very friendly also.

Then of course there are some people who has the money to buy sat equipment, also the hotels vere full of dishes just like in China.
The Turkish embassy vere using a Channel Master, didn't dare to take a pic of course!

The 42E Eurasiasat East beam footprint indeed reaches western parts of Mongolia with 40dbW but Ulan Bataar is so far away. Seems that again a footprint does not tell us the true story. I remember years ago there was somebody asking Dr.Dish about Turksat reception in Mongolia. Can you say roughly how big the dish was ?

The dish was about 100-150 meter away but it was a 1.2 or 1.8 m CM.
The feed/lnb looked very strange, maybe c-band or a combination with ku.
Could it be they also use the dish for transmitting?!?

I see. If it was that small i don't believe that they can get 42E with it. The elevation is also rather low with 8°. So most probably it must have been for data/internet communication over an easier to get satellite if it was similar to those that banks or petrol stations use.

i've been quiet for a while. that's because i've less close to southampton and been sunning it up in tenerife. also checking out the intallations as i go, there's a nice collection of dishes knocking around, its nice to see things pointing different ways rather than all at 28.2E for a change. its quite common to see 19.2E and 30W dishes next to each other. i noted all pubs with s*y seemed to run (guesstimate) offset 2.4M solid dishes. here's one from the 'calamity bar'. i never saw a single BBC channel on TV though (not that i watched much...) so don't know whether this covers 2D or not... i know we've a few forum members down that way, i played spot the ex-pat along in my hire car, i guess its safe to say anyone with a 2.4M dish is enjoying english viewing for s*y...

bye for now. off to greece next week. what's the sat of choice over there? hellas sat 39E? there doesn't seem to be _that_ much on offer for the greeks... i guess the favourite subscription pacakge is nova on 13E?

Nice picture closetosoton :)

To your question:
In Greece of course many people are willing to pay the 50€ per month for Nova. Either because of the sports content or because the terrestrial reception over UHF is terrible. There are also no subpackages and all the major state and private channels are part of it.

Besides that most people are interested in reception of 13E/19.2E/28.2E/39E, some also in 30W/7W/26E/42E

The immigrants of course prefer their favorite positions:
Albanians 16E
russian speaking Greeks 5E/53E/90E
Bulgarians 16E/39E

All the other positions are beeing received only from a small amount of people. Either they have a motorised system or have lived for a long time in another country so they are keen on say 40.5W like a greek in Athens who was in Argentina.
Those are also the ones who are likely to pay for a subscription like Televisa on 43W.

But in general few people that have been watching pay TV for free with pirate cards or other methods for a long time rarely would pay for a subscription, although the most favourite packages are Sky Italia, D+, TPS, Premiere and last but not least Sky UK. Most of them don't have the money, next ones hope that there will be always a way in watching for free and the problem that almost all have the insufficient dish diameter since many frequencies are weak and require diameters of 2.40m or even more..

Haven't been around recently, I was on holiday in Spain for Easter, posting a few pictures take from my recent visit.

The orange dish was in a holiday park, where the visitors from all round Europe mounted lots of different size dishes to anything that would hold them steady.

On the same site was the tiny black dish on the roof of a caravan.

The one on the balcony must lose some signal from the bars?

My family think I'm nuts going round taking pictures of satellite dishes on holiday - I think they're right!

If anyone collects any more feel free to add them...

well, compared to Tenerife, a bish of a dish-haven, Greece didn't seem big on dishes, or keen on big dishes. this is the only pic I got for you - and was indicative of most of what I saw, small dishes pointed at 13E for nova. this was the hotel dish which pipped inot our room 9 channels of fuzzy images...the odd 1M dish looked a little more west, maybe 30W, but not sure. the most amusing one i saw was a 1M solid dish next to a caravan on a campsite that some germans had lugged all the way on holiday with them, inlcuding tripod - probably just for 19.2E german stuff. personally i go on holiday to get away from it all, but it seems portable satellite is taking off in the world of camping & camper vans & the like....

I see. Well i've never been there only in Kalamata and that is 10 years ago. As i can see in the map this seems to be a village between Methoni and Koroni.

If you want to see lots of small and big dishes you gotta go to Athens, Thessaloniki and all major touristic centers like Corfu, Crete, Zakynthos. A quite high amount of smaller dishes can be found in the town of Xanthi and Komotini (Northeastern Greece) where many turkish speaking people live.

sounds about right, although i try not to go looking for them! i was surprised that far south how many albanians where working there for the season, not that i spotted any specific 16E installations - a bit hard to 'spot' compared to 13E - i.e. not much in it!

Albanians work all over Greece since 1990 mostly for less money than Greeks would, the usual immigration problem in the EU. There are quite a lot and since their PayTV is cheap i hear about more and more customers. A friend of mine in Megara west of Athens told me about that because he is working in a TV shop.

Let's return to the dish photos :)

Finally got round to finding our Bulgaria pics out. Taken in August 2002 here on the first pic notice the White Stork perched on the pole, (theres hundreds of them around) the Moskovitch parked on the road, (hundreds of them around too!) the state of the road (pretty typical for rural Bulgaria, and the sensitively sited satellite dish on the roof....
