I remember a friend I had at school had something before all this sky multi-room package stuff that allowed you to watch and control the same sky channel on the tv upstairs and the tv downstairs. You could change the channel from either location even though there was only one sky box downstairs but the limitation was that you could only watch the same sky channel on both tvs so they weren't independent like I think sky multiroom is. I think it was a little dongle that was plugged into the upstairs tv that allowed this somehow.

I have no idea what this device is called or where to get it but I have just purchased top up tv and would like to be able to choose to watch it upstairs or downstairs without moving the top up tv box each time.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like he just linked the main Sky receiver to the TV, upstairs, and used a magic eye system to change channels.

Ah, you mentioned Top-Up TV. Mea culpa .

Only works with Sky Boxes (AS far as I know)

similar to the Sky TVLink system, you'll need a Triax TriLink kit, does pretty much the same thing. You will need a cable feed to the room where you need remote control.

A cable running to the room with the other tv in? I can't do that really - it'd have to run through the entire house. Is that the only option?

You can use a video sender:
A video sender is a device for transmitting domestic video signals wirelessly from one room to another, as for example sending the output of a satellite TV decoder located in the lounge, to a television set in the bedroom.
Some video senders also incorporate a return path, to permit infrared remote controls to operate the equipment whose output is being sent.
The equipment requirement is usually either SCART (Europe) or composite video.

Or if you already have co-ax between the 2 rooms a remote extender may do what you want
