Went for a short walk, the nearest 'honesty box' shop <1 Km from our house still had half a dozen eggs for sale, from the free range hens he keeps in the field opposite his cottage it seems the chickens are getting ready for Easter and getting one up on the supermarkets.

Presume you're referring to the blue shelled egg.

It's actually more likely to be a hen egg rather than a duck egg as these are usually much larger. We used to have a hen that laid blue shelled eggs. There are several breeds that do this and the one we had was called a Legbar.

All our chickens stopped laying last October just before we went away for half term. They started again just before Christmas - just after the shortest day in fact. Out of the five hens we have usually had two a day and occasionally just one. Last week we had a few days when we had three eggs so, yes, Easter's on the way!

Our neighbour's hens have taken umbrage at being confined these past few weeks. A large outdoor lean-to fenced area was erected at the door of their hen house, but they refuse even to use it!

An unregistered smallholder a little further away clearly doesn't care about disease control as his hens, geese, ducks, peacocks etc. are still wandering around without let or hindrance, including over the public highway.

We got a couple of blue tinted eggs from two English sisters who live up the road the other week.......actually the eggs were from their hens, not the sisters....

I think blue tinted eggs are produced by a variety of Silkies....

Sainsbury's do Legbars. The obviously pretty pastel blue shells put me off trying them - seem a bit left field to me. Are the hens g*y?

G*y? No, not Jewish.

They don't taste different but in complete disagreement - I think they look beautiful.

We bought an ostrich egg a few years ago from a local farmer's market - it was mahoosive! After finally breaking into it, it filed a whole cake mixing bowl and a few frying pans for scrambled eggs. Egg.

I do love good eggs. I eat them almost every day, usually soft boiled for breakfast and the darker the yolk the better.

The owner came out when we were struggling to put the no more eggs sign on the box door. He explained it was from a silkie cross and showed us the chicken in question, it had just white feathers
