At the risk of being slated by mega-knowledgable satellite gurus, I've searched the forums but can't find simple enough answers to what I'm sure is extremely basic. I know nothing!

I have an Echostar AD-3000IP receiver with two PCMCIA slots. It is connected to a motorised 1M dish. Up to now I've been satisfied with FTA channels. However, the French seem to have removed all the analogue channels I used to watch so I'd like to get a viaccess2 card(s) to get the digital versions of France 2,3,4,etc.

In the simplest possible terms can someone please tell me:
a) do I need 1 card or two?
 what card(s) do I need to buy?

TIA and apologies if this info is hidden here somewhere already (if so a pointer maybe?)

An official Viaccess card (e.g. TPS) wiil do for the channels you mention, plus many more from this provider, but will cost you a great deal if you buy from a UK source. I've seen them advertised for crazy prices - £485 for a year's subscription, more (£680) for the full package including Multivision.

If your only interest is France 2,3,4 go to 5°w where they are still digital FTA. Also there is TF1 in FTA analogue.

How long will they stay FTA? - I've no idea.

If you want an official card you are talking big money (as said above). You will also need a CI cam - assuming you don't have the ad3000 with the integrated viaccess cam.

Note: Must clean my glasses :-doh!

Yes, the 'cooking' model of the 3000ip needs a CAM, of course, in lieu of a smartcard slot.
A multicrypt emulator CAM such as the Dragon/Trex works fine in the Echostar.

TVM for all the replies.

If I understand correctly I need a CAM first then another card to obtain viaccess? Or does thr Dragon CAM latest kit have everything I would need?

What are the cards being advertised at around £50 which are claimed to be viaccess 2?

For some reason they seem to have disappered from my lists. Maybe I need to re-program the Echostar?

TVM, I'll try that.

Make sure the IF loof is installed correctly on the back of the receiver, and the analogue loop is enabled in the menu. This should bring back the five channels on the satellite (and the others on Astra and a couple on Hotbird).
