Hot from F1.com

Formula One racing's governing body, the FIA, has approved a change to the points systems for this year's drivers' championship, which will see the title awarded to the driver with the most race wins. The rest of the standings, from second to last place, will be decided by the current points system. If two or more drivers finish the season with the same number of wins, the title will be awarded to the driver with the most points, the allocation of points being based on the existing structure...

Crazy decision, especially considering this is against the fans' own wishes. The Championship could be over by mid-season, where's the excitement in that?

I agree, a driver could be second in every race for the whole season and another driver could win only one race and have DNF's in every other race.:-rofl2:-rofl2:-rofl2 I don't think they have thought this one through enough, the FIA have lost the plot again:eek:

But the driver with just one win wouldnt win the championship

SOMEONE has to win all the other races where driver #2 finishes second - it could be 16 other drivers, and then there would be some sort of countback on other placings / points

Personally I think its a bloody stupid idea

You could get the situation where one driver leads the championship by 20 or 30 points at the end of the season thanks to a nice consistant run of places, but he doesnt win the trophy because Fred Bloggs has more wins. Wheres the sense in that - and try explaining it to the general public who see the tables in the papers every other week.

Maybe it's to try to ensure the races are more competitive?

Only first place counts- if you're not first you're nowhere. Although that's not much incentive if you're in fifth place, for example, and too far back to catch up.

Yes I did not explain myself very well but you all know what I meant

It is fundamentally flawed and is not an incentive to win since not all the cars/drivers stand a chance of winning.

I suspect however the rule is coming in because they want to make this championship into an upgraded formula Ford where all the cars are the same, they just haven't a clue

Absolutely stupid, much more chance of a contentious championship win than with the previous system.

Well i for one think it might work.... take for instance the last race.

Lewis needed 5th not first..... and guess what he finished 5th.
its the equivelent of football teams playing for a draw at end of season.... boring

so yes, lets make him go out thinking he HAS to win.

i think it will make it more exciting... something had to be done, to many races got boring over the last 10 years... less overtaking and less risks being taken.

this might be the shake up needed :)

Sorry, but it raises far more questions than it answers.

So what happens with second and third places? Are they on points or wins?

But that is the whole point, last year if you had said to Jenson Button your life depended on you winning, it wouldn't have made a difference as the car was flawed and was essentially too slow. How can this ridiculous rule make that car go faster, it cannot and the drivers were already ringing the car's neck....it is stupidity gone mad.

If anything it this nonsense is a disincentive to the drivers who know they have no chance and do not push on just in the hope that it may rain or a few cars may collide.

It is probably the one thing that finishes me with formula one after I have followed it since the early 60's, you may as well run the races on a scalextric track and televise that, the FIA should be ashamed of such an ill thought out scheme

Surely it would make more sense to have a higher points differential between first and second (if the point is to be argued).

It would be interesting to run that idea through a computer and see how that would have affected previous years.

I cannot see what is wrong with what we have had for a long time, the highest points win and if there is a tie there is a count back based upon the number of wins.

I think this is all just sour grapes because Ferrari thought they had it in the bag last year and were celebrating before the flag. I notice Jean Tote has gone from Ferrari as well now

You could argue that the current (previous) format is flawed. World Superbikes (and Supersports) have the same points scoring format and in 2001 Andrew Pitt became World Supersports champion without winning a single race all season (and only got two second places).

I was going to post similar, but on earlier years of the racing.

I for one would like to see some speciality events from the FIA, in between the main venues, introducing some no holds barred engines, ground effect and some Wacky Race type shenanigans.

Let's introduce the F1thalon

Each driver has to drive his F1 car around the globe in 19 days to qualify for the 2nd event which is rallying a WRC car through the Alps on three wheels, ah yes the third event should be either conkers or mud wrestling, no its decided scalextric races:cool:

Please can we have back just F1 racing without the stupid rules

The FOTA (Formula One Teams Association) had proposed a different points distribution of 12-9-6-5-4-3-2-1, and this proposal was backed by an extensive survey of F1 fans.

The FIA council instead decided to go for a compromise of Bernie's idea, which seems to be something the wee man dreamed up while watching X Factor. Ridiculous.
