I managed to get my first ever C-band transmissions today, after much tinkering and experimenting.

I think the lnb came from cdtronix - it was a cheap one to give me something to play with without costing the earth.

I managed to get 3 frequencies off Arabsat 5C at 20E using a 1m offset dish. I know thats probably not an idea set up but as usual Im using what I have available.

Frequencies logged were:

3884R 27500 3/4
3913R 8150 3/4
4054L 27500 3/4

No sign of any of the other frequencies on 20E at all.

The Mauritanian mux on 3913R is by far the strongest and gave a signal even when the lnb / scalar ring were grossly mis-adjusted

The lnb holder was ziptied to the dish, this worked adequately but needs rethinking before I can attempt anything weaker as it limits the amount of adjustment of both the lnb & the scalar rings..

All in all a fascianting couple of hours tinkering. The dish used was my 16E/23.5E/28E 1m Orbital with the Ku lnbs removed and the dish realigned.

Uh oh, B+D Workmate, probably a bit of twin flex cobbled together down the garden to power the receiver/TV combo, and snails running for cover

'Ere we go, another expert in the making. ;)

The B&D Workmate came in useful last weekend when I was playing around with 53E :-rofl2

Certainly does, but focal point placement is still going to be the bone of contention, regardless of the band.

Then there's the polarity (linear, or circular )?

The receiver I use for experimenting with the dishes outside is an old Vantage I have lying around.

The lnb - well I think its this kit:

AS, have you tried your luck on 49E? I could probably squeeze a 1.2M CM dish on my balcony out of sight, so would be interesting if you get a hint of it on your 1M Black and Decker.

hi - Captain Jack -
i,m going to try this myself with a 1.2 channel master -- when i get the time -- i will need to set up a temporary fixed dish arrangement --

i get a number of channels using 1.8 but i have slightly restricted view with this dish --
signal strengths are varied -- it would be interesting to try with a 1.2

regards ----

Nelson, what C band LNB do you use on your CM? Will a CDTronix one with that conical scalar work OK or are there better options?

i,m using 2 BSC 421 C band l.n.b.,s -- with the blue conical feeds
pride21 uses a -- esx241 c-band lnbf with good results -- vipersan has used both - i dont think there is a lot of difference, they both seem good - maybe it depends somewhat on the dish you use them on -
i will probably use one of them for the 1.2 test --

hi C.J.
i tried 49 east with a 1.2 c.m. last night but could not receive anything --
i had my doubts-- as the t.p. signal strengths using the 1.8 are, on the whole not that strong --
i did however pick up channels from 57 east -- see Vipersans 57 east thread --

cheers nelson.b.

Ah that's a shame. Thanks for checking it out.

I remember VS had an 80cm dish pointed at 49E and got a "sniff" (http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/...-loudest-cband-source-over-uk.html#post985322) so I was hoping for more productive results on a 1.2m.

It's a shame 40E was knocked out - would have been a good source of domestic Russian channels (i.e. not horrible international versions) once Platforma on 9E shuts down in July.
