Hello all,

Please help me! I've been trying to upgrade my Fortec Star 4700 without much success. The Fortec Star site rather unhelpfully suggests upgrading by USB, but says not to do so if 'allcode' method doesn't appear in the upgrade menu

The alternative is to upgrade with RS232. I have connected my usb-to-serial cable to the port on the back of the box and tried using the upgrading tool on the FS website (FS-4700-SW), but I never get further than "Synchronising STBs... Please reset target!".

I have tried resetting the box, starting from standby/off modes, but never get anywhere.

I have tried running the upgrade tool in Windows Vista and Ubuntu under WINE, but neither works!

Assuming that my cable is working ok (I have used it for other serial comms), is there something obvious I'm not trying?

Thanks for your help,

Kind regards,

Mike

Fortecstar in their wisdom have occasionally produced receivers that require a straight through RS232 cable for exchanging information between the STB and PC. The 5600 and 5100+ models spring to mind.

This is not to say that your model is a variation on that theme, but if it's not speaking to your PC, it may be the reason.

My laptop doesn't have a serial port, I only have a usb to serial adapter, is there anything I can do with this?

Well in theory you would need to convert the null modem output of your device (pin 2-3, pin 3-2) to a straight-through output, possibly using another null modem cable connected to the RS232 plug to 'straighten' the pin wiring (pin 2-2, pin 3-3). You would also need a plug-to-plug gender changer between the USB serial cable and the other null modem cable.

No idea if this would solve your problem though.

Can anyone advise me what the latest software upgrade actually fixes?

Apart from the appalling setup information in the User Manual I have managed to set up and customise my FT 4700 ok. I have a Fixed Dish. Are there bugs in the software I haven't come across yet?

I don't want to fiddle about with the USB input and ruin a workable system.
