BBC local radio is teaming up with manufacturers, retailers and a loneliness charity to offer free DAB radios to the most vulnerable people aged over 70.

It comes as millions of people are forced to stay in their homes and isolate from their friends and families because of the Coronavirus outbreak.

This sounds like a desperate attempt to justify DAB/DAB+ as worthwhile, predating the coronavirus pandemic, despite roughly half the countries on the planet having voted with their feet to bypass the medium.

The application form does not actually mention digital audio as a gift, but the Wavelength website has specified the digital initiative previously. Additionally the BBC confirmed it had backpeddled on ASO some two years ago, which sort of makes the whole argument for sourcing DAB radios by their own charity spinoff a bit pointless. ( will find the article in a moment).

Most people have at least one FM radio they never use, common sense suggests it would be better to donate something to a needy neighbour that is already manufactured, surplus to requirement and will continue to work for years to come.

I've just had a quick count here of the radios that have the VHF band (mono and stereo). 14

This is on top of the two that are built into the hifi systems downstairs and in the garage.

In most countries it will be the state broadcaster or the government that carries out marketing exercises and surveys (not necessarily in that order) to verify the demand and the feasibility of the hardware rollout.

There will always be regions that cannot be served by band III broadcasts, no matter how robust the codec is for DAB. Much of this was carried out in the 50's/60s when the frequencies were opened up for television and the physics hasn't changed.

This was the first thing I thought of when I heard about DAB, I thought Band II would have been rearanged with DAB at the top of the band and maybe into the OIRT band. Magical digital doesn't magically alter physics.

I have no idea why the BBC cant grow up and stop this crap and just provide a public service. And get rid of the BBC Sounds malware.

Thats quite a rare photo of Honor, theres not enough many in existance. I rewatched all of her stories last year, there was a new DVD of found stuff updating the first few seasons.
