You have a choice between Sky and Freesat. I have both so I know the good points and warts of both systems. 2.4mtr top quality expandable Portuguese dish is essential.(I live near the Moraira border) For Freesat there is only one receiver to buy-Humax HD Buy Thomson or Pace for Sky. Freesat Advantages- 1. No need to buy free to air card 2. ITV HD only available on Freesat. ITV HD goes 24/7 next year. 3. Better picture definition on Freesat Humax HD receiver even using an SD television. 4. Future proof.Cannot be switched off remotely by Broadcasters as there is no card involved Freesat Disadvantages- 1. Channel 4 and Channel 5 are transmitted on weak transponder with Horizontal polarity. Like BBC 2 you will lose them early evening. Channel 4 problem can be overcome by loading a stronger signal "TT on 4" channel into the non freesat facility on the box. Channel 5 problem cannot as the strong Sky signal on Channel 5 is encrypted. This situation may change in the future. 2. Won't pick up Classic FM signal off Intelsat 28.5 Sky Advantages- 1.Channel 5 signal strong. Also has Fiver and Fiver US which are only coming on Freesat next year. 2. You can pay a Sky sub with a UK address and get all the Sports and other subscription channels 3. Picks up Classic FM strongly 4. Much larger range of programmes in the Electronic Programme Guide although all the free to air unencrypted channels can be added to your Freesat box. 5. Sky has Channel 4 HD, Freesat has not yet. Sky Disadvantages- 1.To get ITV 1 on strongest signal(Channel Islands) it is necessary to go via the Services/Other Channels route. (Very frustrating when making a rapid switch between East Enders and Coronation St!!) 2. Purchase of a Sky Free to Air card is necessary to get the Channel 4 and Five families 3. It is technically possible but unlikely that Sky could disable your Free to air card. Tricky decision? Yes. If you only want to buy one receiver buy a SKY HD box. If your telly down in Spain is not HD ready, still go for HD. Eventually all tellys will be HD. If your credit has not been excessively crunched, get a Dual LNB on the dish and buy a Freesat HD receiver as well. Happy Christmas If you want to phone when you are down here, send me an e-mail to xxxxxx@xxxxx.xxx and I will send you my phone number. (I don' put my phone number on public blogs) Nick Green
