Hi sat gurus. I'm quite techy and brave towards doing firmware upgrades in the past, flashing, etc. At the moment I'm struggling however as I'm having some trouble with my newly installed Technomate 500/600 to receive romanian channels.
I feel I need to give you some background first so I have to thank you for reading this long post (for those who have the patience of doing so).
I wanted to have Romanian channels. So I called someone with the right tools who made the hardware installation in under 1 hour. He provided me with a Technomate 500. As soon as we connected it to the TV, to my surprise, everything worked out of the box - well, not everything ... the main features did.
The person who installed it then told me that I can connect the box to my local network (already done) and watch the channels on my laptop using VLC. This is where the problem then started!
The password was simply not working - we tried, few standard and common ones (such as dreambox, etc.). In the end, the technician said he'd find out the password and let me know next day. It's been a struggle since as he never showed himself being very helpful to get this sorted out.
I disabled the http authetnication from the setup and finally got http access working without asking me for password (which is ok considering i will be accessing it in my LAN only). Though still, watching video with VLC would still not work!
I did few searches and came accross quite few satelites related forums, including this one, and found that there is a firmware version arround on the internet that has got the wrong password set in the passwd file. One way to resolve this is to flash a new software image. At some stage, got hold of the guy who installed the whole thing in the first place who finally did admit that the firmware on the box was the wrong one! Now this is where I need someone to help ...
I think I can find links to download the image as long as I can identify the correct one!
1. How do I find out my current image version?
2. How do I find out what flavor it is (as I understand, one flavor would be "gemini" but I know there are others)?
3. I opened my box and found that on the motherboard it says TM600, whereas the box is labeled TM500 (or vice-versa; can't remember now); the point is that what's written on the motherboard, does not match the model on the box - would that mean that someone installed a different motherboard?
4. When browsing through the file structure, I tried to edit the passwd file - but I dont' have permissions to do so. Is there anyway I could change the permissions on the file?
5. Also browsing through the files, I find references to "dreambox" and "gemini" - what is the difference between the two? And why do I have this "dreambox" stuff in there if the box is actually labeled "Technomate" ? Can I use a dreambox firmware on techomate hardware?
6. Let's assume I get enough help to actually update the firmware - would all my channels work straight away, keeping in mind that some of the channels I can view now are meant to be scrambled? Or do I need to save key files or something similar that I would then upload on the box post upgrade?
