When will HD come on stream via the aerial (NOT Sky) is it planned soon or is it just going to be either cable or BSKYB for the time being??.

I just come back from the USA and its HD everywhere. What shit we put up with in this country (OK I know PAL is Better than NTSC) but were so slow in getting new stuff (never mind cheaper in USA)

yes I like teletext quicker than graphics type of sky & freeview
well mobiles I don`t know about much

but the thrust of my point was our long wait for new tec` years behind, plus the price of it

I don't think US Tv is bad,but I think the constant ads make it virtually unwatchable. And I don't like them telling you before the break what's coming up after the break,
which of course they are doing here now as well.
I like the idea of HD using an antenna especially if it's not subscription.

Quite famously, NTSC is "never the same colour" (!), because subcarrier phase shifts can change the hues. Originally, in the 1950s, NBC started off colour with its "round robin", a 2000 mile long coax link which went round all the affiliate local tv stations. Apparently, at the end of the link, the quality was pretty grim.

With slightly increased complexity, PAL exchanged hue errors for saturation ones, an improvement on the original NTSC colour system.

500 lines, and NTSC colour, makes USA SDTV the world's worst - the original system, and problematical for this reason - so the "push towards" HD has been bigger there. European SDTV (PAL, SECAM) is much better quality.

The USA has started digital/HD tv both together, with some progs in HD format. Note all USA terrestrial transmissions use ATSC, a system entirely incompatible with European COFDM. There's no problem about actually boradcasting HD on COFDM, just as on ATSC, but - at least in UK - the problem is currently lack of bandwidth, until analogue switchoff.

HDTV via DTT definitely not countrywide before analogue shut down - say 2012/13. There are some tests happening in the London area sometime soon.
