Hello, i have a question. I live outside of UK, I have a satellite receiver in my flat and I want to watch football matches in as real time as possible. My signal is obviously delayed quite a bit, comparing the time in the upper left corner with the actual time of the live game, the picture delay after the real match is 15 seconds. I would like to know what the delay is in your country in UK, if you have an original Sky sport receiver? Can you check that for me? The simplest way to check this is if you go to a bookmaker like bet365 or similar and go to IN PLAY matches and compare the time that is written on the bookmaker for that match with the time that is written on the picture on the TV (most matches have the time in the upper left corner). For me right now the Girona - Real match is 15 seconds late, which is a lot, I think a couple of seconds is appropriate. Thanks.

How do you know the bookmaker's timer is correct unless you are actually at the event? FWIW on Sky HD Tottenham vs Chelsea is two seconds behind Bet365.

Okay, thank you very much on that information. I have been on like one hundred games of my footbal club and every time is the same time at bet365 and in live match on stadium. So I have one more question for you, if you are from England can you also check some game from spain or some other league and tell me if it is also 2 seconds or it is higher?

There will always be delays from real time. Some of these will be

uplink
downlink
framestores
encoding at the uplink centre
decoding at the receiver
encryption addition & deletion
if the game is on more than one satellite hop then some of these will be doubled.

There will ALSO be differences caused by how the channels are statmuxed (statistical multiplexing) onto the transponder - for example if you watch a transponder with say BBC1 on it & flick up & down the channels some of the output will be delayed compared to others. This is because you cant have say 10 channels all showing exactly the same output where there is high bitrate demand (eg a football match) Therefore the output of the channels is staggered over a few seconds to smear the peak demand bit rates.
