Advice Needed Humax Foxsat HDR

Friend has a Humax Foxsat HDR that will not record. Every time you re-boot it, it states the hard drive needs to be formatted, which it does, but still will not work.

Basic question, is it ducked!

If you have the facilities, take the hard drive out and do a low level check connected up to a computer as an external drive.

Thank you for having the good grace to ask if I have the facilities, rather than the faculties! Alas, the box is about 25 Km away, even if it were here I don´t have an external power supply to drive it, also not sure if I could connect it to the laptop, which it the only hardware I have that may be able to read it.
Just wondered if anyone has had this before and cured it by removal and re-installation, or by changing software.

More background info needed.
What make, size, and type.of drive?
Did problem start spontaneously, or did friend change hdd?

Thevfoxsat is not new, and may have problems.with certain newer drive types.
