Hundreds gather to watch world-famous steam train in Somerset

Hundreds of people gathered at stations across Somerset today to witness an iconic steam locomotive speed through.

Those who travelled to Yeovil to witness the locomotive were in for a treat as it made a pit-stop at both Yeovil Pen Mill and Yeovil Junction for around two and a half hours.

The special visit made up part of Yeovil Railway Centre’s turntable birthday celebrations.

A spokesman for the railway centre said: “To help celebrate our turntable's birthday we have a special treat with the turning, watering and coaling of Union of South Africa 60009.”

The LNER Class A4 Union of South Africa is making its way from London Paddington to Weymouth today (July 23).
