I very much doubt a geostationary orbit will be the final result, despite the last days celebrations.

Still, a mission success for locking onto the bird in the first place.

27.5W is the planned slot.

Above the equator ?

How many times a day ?

If they can pull this off (and repeat for a second piece of insurance writeoff) I will be very impressed

As you were.

If ebverything goes well, a year lifespan is planned for I-901 at 27.5W Then MEV1 takes it back to disposal orbit undocks & moves onto its next mission.

Is it similar to Intelsat 907.
When is switching planned ?

Footprints should be fairly similar. Switching date is currently unknown - it will depend on how well the tow back down to geostationary orbit goes. Extensive testing will have to take place to prove the combined MEV1/I901 stack is structually stable before any movement can be contemplated.

Remember this is a completely new concept so a lot of investigative work will be going on in the background to validate the concept.

It's a pretty impressive thing if they manage to do it!

Great to be able to extend the life of satellites that would be perfectly functioning other than for running out of the fuel keeping them in geosynchronous orbit. Hopefully will be able to cut down a bit on space debris...

They mention in one of the articles about IS901 and IS907 that the beams on both are steerable. I guess that beam will be reconfigured to the north a bit to serve the UK and Icelandic users of 27.5W!

So what active satellite in geostationary orbit will be @ 27.5 west after 901 moves back to the graveyard ?

907 has had its operational status revised to this quarter, it should already have been moved off station but for some miserly fuel use later on in its life.

I would assume their plan for another satellite construction will be put back by a year rather than juggle something already up there into place.

All assuming MEV1 does its thing of course.

Several tweets mention IS-901 will stay there for 5 years, not just 1 year.

If ebverything goes well, a 5 year lifespan is planned for I-901 at 27.5W
