I have 2 computers with Win 98SE setout as follows:

Comp. 1 (main) Realtek Network card, Dial up modem, ASDL modem, Zone alarm, Internet sharing.

Comp. 2 Realtek Network card, Dial up modem, Zone alarm.

I can access files on both computers when I turn ZA off. Although I authorise ZA to each network I am unable to access files if left on.

I can access internet on Comp. 1 but when I try to access via Comp. 2 with Comp. 1 connected, I just get the usual "cannot detect network settings." TCP/IP settings checked and O.K.

Any idea where I am going wrong please.

Have you run the internet connection sharing wizard Sab?

how is your adsl modem connect to your pc? is it using usb port? if so then each of the computer must have a static ip in order for ZA to connect, in the pc with asdl, goto control panel, network properties, tcp/ip properties for realtek adapter only, check specify an ip address, give it 192.168.1.1, then the other pc give it 192.168.1.2.

in ZA setting of main pc, give access all area to ip 192.168.1.2 and in the other pc, in za setting do the same to 192.168.1.1, then you should be able to connect while ZA is on. in order to connect the pc without adsl in internet properties, lan setting, connect using proxy server 192.168.1.1 then you can share internet as well

I forgot to mention that the ADSL modem is a PCI internal.

On the 2nd comp. under TCP settings it shows Dial up modem and Realtek network card.

When I ran the connection wizard only the dial up modem showed.

Have you installed internet connection sharing on the main PC Sab? There is also another utility you can get which is slightly better.

yes rolw, but not on the 2nd.
Is it the dial up modem that might be causing the trouble?

When you run the new connection wizzard from Internet Explorer, you should have an option to connect by LAN, this is where you can enter the proxy address.

Tried it - won't have any of it!!

switched off ZA and last time I tried could not access 1st or 2nd for file sharing.

I've got a copy of ME but I've found with this its OK whilst it 's running but sometimes replacing system files can be a problem. a TV card is installed (Rave) and I'm having trouble getting sound and teletext with that. Could be the problems are related. I think teletext relies on TCP settings.

Try this link Sab http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/index.asp . Personally i would invest in a modem router at around £70, it would solve all of your problems in one go and means that both PCs can access the ADSL line without the other being switched on.
