Yes, you can do. You may need a specific plug-in for your chosen viewer to enable you to access the PIDS of the channel you want to record whilst watching another channel on the TP. For instance DVBViewer uses 'Video Recorder Plugin'

Cool, would it be possible to record in a .ts file that contains the subtitle file which could be demuxed?

llew, could you recommend a tv tuner card that can achieve this? I was asking on other forums and was told that you can only record 2 channels for sky with 2 tuners because of the sky encryption. Others said you could and that a CI/CAM is neede. Do you know of any cards that can a) record multiple channels on same transponder and b) record to .ts. Would it only work for free to air?

cheers

It's not the tuner card that would enable you to do multiple recordings, it's whatever viewer application you use with it. With DVBViewer, you just add more than one Video recorder plugin. They are recorded as a .ts file.

Don't know about recording encrypted Sky channels. I've only used a software NDSCam and card for watching one channel.

Yes, I use DVB Viewer to record multiple channels this way with a dual dvb-t USB device from haupauge without the use of any plug-in.

But, What your saying is it will work the same way with free to air satellite?

You mean a dual input DVB-S(2) card? I don't have experience of those, but I would assume it's OK. DVBViewer (the Pro version) is very versatile, I use it with my Hauppauge DVB- S2 and DVB-T cards.

Are you able to record multiple FTA channels on same transponder with your DVB-S cards?
and in .TS format?

I have a DVB-S2 card in one PC, and a DVB-T card in another. I don't record multiple channels, just the one. As I mentioned above, they are .ts files.

thanks again for the info.

Are you able to check if you can record more than 1 channel on the same transponder with freesat? Also do you know if you are able to record teletext subtitles from your .ts files?

cheers

I'll let you know when I get my Video Recorder plug-in back again

Since upgrading my DVBViewer Pro, I've lost it. Trying to download it again from the Member's site resulted in a corrupt zip file, and I've reached the maximum download point there until it expires on Thursday. I'll try again then.

Not sure about Teletext subtitling. I'll look into that.

Yes, shows subtitling on playback if you have enabled Teletext and DVB subtitling in Recorder's Format Options prior to recording (had to make a new recording with these options ticked, as my other .ts files didn't have them).

With more than one Video Recorder plug-ins, yes - if they're on the same transponder.

It all depends on software, not the card. Some software will record the whole MUX, which can be split into its component parts later for decryption and viewing.

Yeah Ive done this very successfully with DVB Viewer for freeview DVB-T, pretty easy to do.
So its the same deal with freesat then? Or is it slightly more complicated?

Whatever flavour of DVB .ts streams you have, -T or -S, it will include everything (teletext, audio language options etc. - if the broadcaster is transmitting them of course).

Here'a a typical DVB -S2 .ts stream from BBC2, including Teletext and Subtitling descriptors, so whether you're using DVBViewer for terrestrial or satellite, it's going to have the same stream info to use for recordings if they are in the stream.

Ok great!
Now for my next question.
Can you recommend a tv tuner card out there that can record dvb-t and dvb-s (at the same time) ?
much appreciated.
