Is my Humax VA FOX suitable?

Hi All,I have very litle knowledge on this technology so please bear with me.I would like to know if my Humax VA FOX with viaccess embedded can be useful for adding self-programmed cards. The reciever is about 2 and a half years old. I would like to view Football, films and adult stuff. My dish is directed at Hotbird 13E and Astra 19.2E.If the receiver isn't very suitable I'd willing buy another reciever. As I say I'm new to all this, but it looks like this hobby could be fun what with all the detective work we need to do to get things to work.Many thanks in advance.questioner

Suitable for what? you do not say which package or channel you would like to view, perhaps that is why nobody has responded. You have to be very specific but I would say you have very little chance with that stb and cam. You may not have had the unit long yourself but it is of a design at least 4 years old if not a lot more.

Your stb has an embedded Viaccess cam which will be probably be Viaccess 2.3 this is so out of date it will not allow you to watch much at all even with a paid subscription card. I would buy something up to date if you want to experiment with up to date encryptions.

Dont get too excited - TV Cabo, the Spanish channels and Multivision film channels are no longer available - they switched to a secure encryption before Christmas.

Multivision still works , also you will get Premiere , Digitv , Polsat and a few scattered channels . Cabo and D+ is no longer open . But nothing lasts forever , all these packages have announced encription changes which means black screens . The receiver is a bargain anyway , even for fta , buy it , you will be pleased with it .

Indeed, the TM has the most support at the moment, but I am not going to recommend a unit that I have never owned or never used. You only have to read a few threads on the forum from members who have them to know that they are reliable and easily patchable. As for how long that situation will remain it is not possible to say, the hobby is basically a game of cat and mouse

Many thanks for all your comments. I already possess an FTA receiver, but was considering the FTA one on Ebay because of it already being patched and that the Seller would send on details on how to do further patching, along with a RS232 cable.
I don't know what to do. Do I buy an already patched receiver - there's a couple of Sellers on Ebay that sell these; but I may find the REAL choice of de-encrypted channels is poor and further patching may not add any more; I'd then be left with an additional FTA receiver that wouldn't offer anything more than my present one. The Seller's Feedback on Ebay doesn't offer any information concerning whether the listed de-crypted channels is actually what one receives. If Multivsion isn't available then everything else on the list could be questioned;
or does this forum contain all the information, hidden within, towards helping me obtain a receiver, a programmer and cards?

The knowledge base on this forum can help you patch most common receivers.

However you have to realise that the availability of pay services comes and goes - Christmas 2006 there was virtually nothing open for several weeks, then nagra 2 was blown out of the water and all sorts of goodies become opened.

However, things have gone steadily downhill since then with various packages going black....
