World Cup final brings no cheer for beleaguered UK broadcaster ITV
July 10th, 2006, 10:37 UTC by Andy
Zinedine Zidane is not the only one who has cause to rue last night’s World Cup final in Berlin. British commercial broadcaster ITV had a disastrous performance when showing the match in direct competition with the BBC. ITV has always come a poor second whenever the two go head to head with live coverage of major events, but traditionally the audience is about 3-1 in the BBC’s favour. Last night, the BBC’s audience for the World Cup Final was five times the size of the one that watched on ITV1, according to unofficial overnight figures. BBC1 had an audience of 17m and a 60.8% share compared with just 3.5 million for ITV1, a 12.4% share. Even more embarrassing for ITV, 100,000 viewers apparently switched over to watch the penalty shootout on the BBC.
