It transpired that it was Massa who was carrying more fuel, and Massa led Kimi after the first pit stops. The battle continued, as the two exchanged fastest laps, and so the second pit stops would dictate the result. Kimi came in first, and in the same lap Massa set a new fastest lap. That was enough for the Brazilian, who came in the very next lap and came out ahead of Raikkonen.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Medium'"></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Medium'"><span style="color: black"><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Medium'">Kubica was never at any risk of losing his 3rd place, and during the early stages of the race was even able to keep Raikkonen insight.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Medium'"></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Medium'"><span style="color: black"><span style="font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Medium'">But what of Hamilton? Lewis’ day was a disaster! A nightmare start off the grid left the Brit ending the first lap in 9th, behind Fernando Alonso. And then the talking point of the race occurred in lap 2. Coming out of turn 3, Hamilton ran into the rear right tyre of Alonso, losing his front wing in the process. Conspiracy spiralled – Had Alonso ‘checked’ his enemy? The facts, as McLaren confirmed later, were that Hamilton’s front wing failed through the turn, resulting in the bizarre heightened acceleration exiting the turn.
