HI EVERYONE

For a little while I have had a 500GB laptop HDD kicking around and doing nothing, so today I opened one of my Samsung Sky HD boxes and dropped the laptop HDD into it. I did a system reset which formatted the drive......and what a surprise......a more quieter box. The HDD I tried is HGST (Hitachi I think) Z5K-500 and it worked very well indeed. The unit only pulls 700ma so that's not going draw loads from the PSU and is 5400RPM and 3.0GB/S.

These Samsung's have a fan fitted to the HDD caddy too, but I reckon by using a laptop HDD that could be eliminated as the heat generated won't be as much as with the standard full size drive.

An interesting little experiment that resulted from boredom and it worked! :D

Up to 250gb are reasonavble. The prices do get a bit silly after that though :D

The prices are dropping and further drops are expected over next year according to some tech sites. Soon blazing fast RAID will be possible at decent prices. Given how they tend to fail without warning even with SMART monitoring I think some kind of RAID is a good idea.

I am guessing it's to do with Pcie-SSD arrival which achieve stupendous real life speeds. Well over 2Gb/sec... As opposed to SATA ones which barely reach 200Mb/sec.

Anybody know if the laptop drives that are caddied in the plastic case for the Xbox 360/slim are any good for PVR use?
