i am new to all this and i need someone that will help me and explain all the different things that i have red on the site.

i feel stupid asking because i usually understand things that i read but this is one thing that has me more confused then when i started.

i would be very grateful if someone would e-mail me and would be in a position to explain and answer any questions i have.

to be honest everything confuses me. but i'll tell you what i want to use it for. and maybe someone can help.

i want to get canal+. so i want to know if i can actually get the channel and if so what programmer should i get and anything else i need to get started into programming card

also what type of card do i need to use

can you please tell us which receiver you have, and a few details about your computer. Most programmers use a com port and USB connection, a dedicated Com port is necessary to program in Phoenix mode, but there is at least one programmer that can program using just the USB connection, Adteknik 3.6, which is very useful if using a laptop or a computer without a dedicated Com port.
At present I'm using a Dragon Cam and receiving a wide variety of channels, without a card, apart from the Dragon Loader card (in my case a Fun Card 7), which is needed to update the Dragons firmware. I get most of the Premiership football along with films and general entertainment, mostly from Hotbird.

which type would you recommend?? what to do you have at the moment??
what is the cheapest one on the market that will do the things i need it to.

i have a laptop so i would say a usb connection would be easiest.

how do you get the channels without a card?

It really would help us to help you if you give us a few more specific things about the receivers you can get hold of (?), and anything else relevant like your rough location, the type of dish you either have, or can accommodate, which satellites you can 'see' (in the southern sky)... or at least which way your desired mounting position/wall is facing, and how much you want to spend.

The more info you can give us, the quicker we can narrow it down for you and get you going. Any other desires or restrictions on your setup? How technically proficient are you? Do you want to 'get your hands dirty' and be involved in loads of techie programming, or do you want an easier and more reliable viewing life?

To answer your first questions, 'Phoenix Mode' is simply a 'state' that you can put your card programmer in, such that it can program the latest generation of high spec cards. Don't buy a programmer that is capable of doing this.

The Dragon loader card is very similar to a Fun7 card. You program these cards, then place them in the Dragon CAM (which is a piece of hardware much like a PCMCIA card). The whole lot the plugs into a 'CI' (Common Interface) slot in your chosen receiver. Don't buy a receiver without at least one CI slot. You can program some non-CI receivers directly, but a CI slot is best to begin with and gives you much more flexibility.

That's a very simplistic view, but it'll give you an idea. Once you have programmed your CAM in this way, you can often then remove the card.

i'm from the south of ireland. can get any size dish. but 1.2metre would be one that i have at home. position of the dish doesn't matter. i will put it in the position to get the channels i can get. a triax receiver would be the easiest to get hold of. pretty proficient with setting up satellites have access to satellite finders. its the programming i'm interested in getting into.

i would like to start out on the "more reliable viewing" and once i'm used to that, i will probably go into the more techie programming.


also interested in knowing what products are recommended. recievers, programmers ect.. what ever i would need really.

any web site to help me choose would help too.

with a laptop I'd go for a programmer that can program using only the USB cable, there are 2 that I'm aware of, the Adteknik 3.6 or the new Infinity USB unlimited.

The Dragon Cam can decode channels by use of the firmware, which is updated by programming a card and loading the new firmare into the Cam, for more details please read through the Dragon forum. The latest Dragon is the 4.1, which is getting some good feedback on performance, but not on build quality, and to recommend it we would need to know which make and model of receiver you intend to use, for compatibility purposes. Programming cards is quite easy and there are step by step guides available to show you how to do it.

well the thing is installing satellites is what my dad does for a living. but he never got into programmming cards because he could never get his head around it.

so at the moment i have a triax receiver at home. which has a cam slot in it.

model number is: 262 dvb75 via access cam.

well thats what i was told. couldn't check myself because i'm in college and not at home during the week.

programming cards is amazingly easy now, with the new software and programmers, as for your receiver this is not mentioned on the Dragon site, so I am unsure whether it is compatible with that Cam:

I personally have an Infinity/Phoenix USB programmer, bought a while ago, which can do everything at the moment, but if I was buying a new programmer I would certainly consider the Infinity USB unlimited, as it is the only one, that I've seen, that is capable of programming Sim cards, which, judging by the Dragon 401, might be the next step in this hobby.

at the moment you don't need a card with a Dragon Cam, but who knows what will be needed in the future. I have a Dragon 3.01, which can read cards, and as I understand it the new Dragon 4.1 can read 2 cards at once, but I would advise you read more concerning compatibility with your receiver. As for where to buy if you do a search on google you should find lots of places, here are a few:
