big ugly with oldschool rxs... megabox and eurostar

Hey guys, very new to this, but I have been reading almost non-stop for 3 days...

I think I have what I need but if anyone can confirm FOR SURE, I can finally sleep.

OK... Megabox rx by Mediastar (2Mb) and big ugly dish.

My dad has this receiver setup to hotbird/astra/etc... but only limited channels.

I have downloaded the file for megabox beginning with 20070604_*******_V178 and downloader 2.8

Will this err.... update the rx for all the channels on all available birds or just hotbird?

And, I tried to unrar the downloader and kept getting an error "cannot open c:/.../downloader.ini" but I didn't have the null cable in the computer at the time (I figured this shouldn't make a difference).

Is there a newer version of the downloader for megabox anyone can help me find, or is version 2.8 working and I just needed the null cable in the computer?

Welcome to the forum dubseller

My advice is if you do not know 100% what you are doing then don't mess with it unless you can afford to be without the stb on a permanent basis.
For your information almost everybody has limited channels on hotbird as little is open at the moment

hey thanks topper! nice to be here!

But in all honesty, the megabox is a few years old and I talked my dad into getting a new viewsat/consat/pansat/etc or similar...

The thing is, when I said "I am new to this," I meant new to satellite systems outside north america. I am from Canada and have actually setup 2 systems already but they are easy (bell express vu and dish network), so I am not TOTALLY new...

Just new to the availability of birds/receivers/etc in this here parts (there are so many!)

So, getting back to business, this megabox is ready to go to the recycling bin. I just thought I might try to keep her around a little while longer (before we go HD)...

I have the right files, loader and cables.

Just one little question... Do I upload the .zip file? Or unrar the .zip file and upload the .bin file only?

Thanks...

Well if you are confident that what you have will do the job then obviously anything I say is not going to stop you :)

I cannot imagine any stb wanting to accept winzipped files or rar files most receivers want a bin file.
Good luck

thanks topper,

I am only confident that I have searched (seems endless) to figure out which files and loader I would need to patch the megabox and also the method to go about doing this. And since we are getting HD receivers, this was more like practice...

Do you think receivers sold in the middle east can be blocked from being patched? Just curious because I was trying to load the megabox and I keep getting nowhere. The loader just waits for a connection. I have checked the com ports to make sure they match, and the receiver is switched off until I hit "connect", and then I switch the receiver on. And nothing happens...

Any ideas?

Thanks again!

Sorry I have absolutely no idea, the method you are using seems correct but there may well be some way of blocking that. The only experience I have had is with my stb and there are no patches made for it.
