well i have a like new 1224 motor here, but never really taught it would be able to comfortably drive the cm 1.8m dish.
how would it be like in windy conditions would it hold the dish very solid or would there be dish movements in windy conditions?

do you guys think the 1224 motor would comfortably handle the cm 1.8m ?.

Iv'e ran a CM 1.8 on a 1224 motor about 12 years ago but i fitted a rear counter balance weight to make life safer for the motor effort especially pulling back from an extreme arc position. Always used to turn the dish face side ways on to an oncoming high wind because the motor case casting and internal gears have been known to get damaged if exposed to really high winds.

Correct John. I remember collecting what was left of it. Still have the spares in case mine needs any bits on the future

Aye, that Unicorn Satellite sold reet top class kit in the day.
I still have one of their 1.2m prime focus dishes here on a Jaeger 1224 motor.

I certainly could not risk a 1.8 c.m. on that type of motor here ... too exposed to strong west winds - i would only consider fitting one in a very sheltered location ... 1.2 c.m. is the limit here.

Presumably it is the alloy mixture used in the casing that is the issue when it is overloaded with dish weight and windload.

Other H-H motors that should be OK for 1.8m and larger dishes that I am aware of are listed below.
They are all out of production and not so easy to find nowadays but they are worth looking out for.

1. KHM 36RL (The Elephant), this was in production before the Jaeger 1224 and it had a steel casing.
2. SMO36. this was considered to be a more heavy duty version of the Jaeger 1224 and could readily accept a decent size dish.
3. AJAK H180, probably the best of the lot and easily capable of swinging a "big wan" about with its chain drive.

Agreed Nelson..I initially put my 1.8 on a 1224, when the wind blew it was blowing it around like a rag doll..much better on a polar mount.

I remember that 1.8m CM setup you had on the polar mount, it was a nice setup.
The polar mount was the heavy duty one from SSS I think?
