today - cleaned up all the polar mount components, sanded them down - cleaned, applied rust converter, which is currently drying. (pics to follow) - tomorrow, anti rust primer, and then a couple of layers of the top coat (green).

happy new year - all!

Problem is the total length is ok but the threaded part is too long .
You must buy a much longer bolt so the shaft is equal to the original and cut the overlength
why would it be a problem to have threaded rod as opposed to no thread - its only the elevation angle - once set, its set, surely it doesnt matter if its threaded? does it....

thanks mate - so its fine to use threaded rod, i got the impression from some posts here, that it needed to NOT be threaded in the middle like the original bolt was...smooth until 1 inch from the end.

found this - sounds perfect
hxxps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M12-PART-THREADED-HEXAGON-HEAD-BOLTS-NUTS-HIGH-TENSILE-GRADE-10-9-BLACK-SCREWS-/183602341401?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

160 or 170mm length - smooth but includes 36mm thread at the end....wish there was a 12.5mm option.

M12 is 12mm, your bolt is 12.5mm you said which would be 1/2"

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!

Which is why an "Imperial" 1/2" UNC bolt is required!

PS: isn't it ironic that "the land of the free" used - and still does" - "Imperial" measurements!

Some 1/2 in bolts here

Looks like you could maybe use an 8 inch one of them and cut off the surplus thread ..... not cheap though .. and no nut with it .. but there are nuts in the sellers other items

I've not found a socket set that hasn't got a 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, or 3/4 inch ratchet.

Metric tyres ? Pah !

Actuator sizes ?

Rust converter stuff applied after sanding off all the rust \ crud \ and flakey old paint.
The rust goes maroon colour.

If you haven't put up a big dish before beware it is very heavy but pivots very easily so always be careful where you put your fingers when you put the dish face on and are setting it up.

It is easier to do the initial set up with a locking bar than a jack.

The first time is difficult, it is easier to adjust it once you have centered it and got an east and west satellite. :D
