That's what i do .I know Conax change CAIDs sometimes , that might be the case if the card hasn't been topped up singe 2013 .. in that case the guy needs to call them to do a forced upgrade .  Best solution is say to him to refund you , sent the card back and have him make it work before re-sending it ..
