I live sin Stockholm, Sweden and have recently moved house. I want to install a Sat system so I can get UK TV.

On the new house the previuos owners have installed a large TV aerial and a Sat dish on the roof. One of the previous owners is Russian and the Sat dish was to get Russian TV.

Yesterday I climbed up into the attic to have a look at the cabling, etc and I found something peculiar. There are two seperate cables coming in from the roof (I am assuming that it is one cable for the Sat Dish and one cable for the TV antennae).

Each cable has a two way splitter (A &. The first cable goes into the "IN" conx of a two way splitter (A). Then, the first "OUT" cable from that splitter (A) runs to a bedroom but the second "OUT" cable runs into the "OUT" conx of a two way splitter ( on the other cable. The other splitters ( secound "OUT" cable then runs down to the living room.

Can someone explain what is going on? Why is an OUT from A going into an OUT from B?

I was thinking that maybe the splitters are dumb and will work IN/OUT on any connection?

Yes, if the splitters have a single passthrough for DC and are connected correctly then you might get some TV signal into the sat downcable but you wouldn't get any sat signal down the TV cable.

It's such a mess you should take them out and just have straight through connectors. If you want satellite TV in more thasn one room then you could put a multi output LNB on the dish and run extra cables to the rooms concerned. If you want TV signals to share the cable then you could use diplexers at the top and bottom or, if you want to go to enough rooms, use a quattro LNB and multiswitch to combine evrything properly.

with a two way splitter you will have typicaly 3dB loss from your input to one output, but the isolation between output ports could be anything upwards of 20dB.
so i'd be surprised if you had any TV signal in your living room if the TV signal has to pass via the output ports of 'splitter b'.

Hi
OK connected my new Humax freesat box to the Sat cable and I'm getting no signal strength at all.

I think the Dish on the roof is pointing to somewhere other than 28.2 East.
Could this be why I am getting no signal? I would have thought the receiver will still recognize a signal from the LNB even if it was from the wrong Sat?

I appreciate that I won't get any channels but it should still detect a signal strength?

Thx
Ciaran

It probably won't show anything because a Freesat Box will be looking for a sniff from the default Transponder on Eurobird 1, before it goes into its Installation routine.

Maybe the dish is aligned to 5E ..................

Got it working - had the wrong cable plugged in!
Getting lots of Middle Eastern channels and Sky Italia.
Do you know what Sat I'm hitting?

Yes, Hotbird.

Had you used this Freesat box before, then?

IIRC they won't function properly in non-Freesat mode until you've successfully done a non-Freesat scan on 28E (ie using the pre-stored and somewhat out of date 28e TP list!).

Anyway, at least you are getting somewhere!

Yeah, quite pleased with the progress I'm making (with a lot of help from this forum)!
