Hi,

I'm a complete and utter newbie who has read this thread, but I'm finding it's a little too much to take in. By all means pelt me with tomatoes in your imagination, but I would really appreciate finding out the following:

a) How to get Nilesat in London (as many channels as possible, staples being Melody, Rotana, Mazzika and channels showing dramas, especially Ramadan ones)
b) Where to buy the right dish, LNB thing and receiver
c) A dealer or someone who can set it up/sell all of the above and just do it for me

Is it a case of setting up the equipment to the right degree and waiting for the received to pick it up and show it on the TV?

Sorry and thank you in advance for your help!

Welcome to the forum.

A quick search of the channels demonstrates a large dish required as some of programming are transmitted on horizontal transponders [Vertical Tp's received on a decent 100/120cm in London].

Have you also considered Badr 4 26.0E as some the channels are duplicated here.

Yeah, I read that in the various threads around here and 1.2-1.8m dishes being best. For the best set-up, what cost can I expect? I saw £1500 somewhere, but that was from a very old thread.

I don't want it for sports. The named (mostly music) channels are the ones that I want, but I live with Egyptians who don't want the same channels as they get at home which I can't remember the names of.

Is there a company or anyone who can buy the best equipment for hz and vt transponders (don't know what the word means) and set-it all up for an ignoramus like me?

First of all, you need to decide what budget you have.

A dish for Nilesat verticals is not too bad and a 1m ish dish can be got away with, for variable reception on some vertical transponders. A 1.2m will get you the vertical transpnders a bit more reliably, and a 1.8m, the horizontal transponders also(with not much rain margin).
Knowing what channels you want is very important, i.e whether they are on H or V tranponders. Check lyngsat.com

Also you need to make sure that a larger dish eg 1.8m can be accommodated.

A 1m setup would be of relatively low cost, a 1.2 a bit more, a 1.8m would be costly for most pockets.

I want as much of vt as I can get:

The channels I want are 50/50 across horiztonal and vertical. Budget is whatever is a reasonable cost to get the aforementioned channels on horizontal tp:
10775 H - Cairo drama
10892 H - Al Hayat drama and mosalsalat
11766 H - Nile drama and Rotana cinema (and Om Koultom radio)

Sorry, can't edit above post.

11843 H - Nile channels and Dream 2
12034 H - Al Jazeera channel and Melody Aflam
12476 H - Melody drama

I would like, but accept that I can't get, as many of those as possible.

I suppose I could stick the dish in the garden. Alternatively, there's the flat roof belonging to the ground floor extention which we can reach either via the garden using a ladder or through one of the first floor rooms to house the dish on. It's a lot easier to mount on than a sloping roof, so I assume setting it up there will be cheaper than on a proper roof.

A 1.8m Channel Master (Raven) with matched feedhorn should do the job.

Ground mounting is usually the easiest option.

Apart from that, anything above a 1m is supposed to have planning permission, so keeping it discreet is less likely to attract attention.

The cost of the dish, LNB and feedhorn is around the £800 mark, unless you can find a 2nd hand one, plus the cost of the mount (4.5 inch diam pole) and fitting.

You do realise just how big a 1.8m dish is dont you? :D

And that you need planning permission for such a monster. BTW if retrospective pp is refused and you are ordered to take it down the council can come onto the property and not only remove the offending item, but then charge you for doing so!

Rotana Cinema is on Badr 6 so would not need a smaller dish.

Nile Drama, Cairo Drama are not on 26E.

Most of the others are Ok on 26E though.

Hi all,

Sorry to revisit and apologies and thanks in advance for the really stupid questions and your patience!

How hard is it to get Badr? If they're both on 26E, what's the difference between Badr 4 and 6? I've seen some Middle Eastern Restaurants with Badr as they've had Melody and other music channels on.

The problem is that I need someone to set it all up for me, whether it's Badr or Nilesat.
£800 is too much. £300-350 (really stretching it) is my max budget.

What set-top box, LNB and dish are recommended for either Nilesat or Badr? Are there any other things needed? (Sorry, this must like spoon feeding a baby!)

The Badr dsatellites - there are 3 of them (Badr 4 5 & 6) - are the constellation slotted at 26E. Only Badr 4 is available on sensible sized dishes - the others will need big dishes.

You can see the channel line ups on eash bird here:

If some of the channels are on 5 or 6 you are going to need that big dish again - or scale back your ambitions.

Does anyone here know which sports channel shows Egyptian football matches?

The only thing I can see that I would like that isn't on Badr 4 is Rotana.

So is getting Badr 6 just dependent on the size of the dish?
If so, what sort of cost am I likely to be looking at?

Your budget of £300 to £350 doesn't cover you for badr6, unless you were able to pick up a 2m + dish cheaply second hand and install it yourself.

For badr4 though, you are comfortably within budget, including receiver, and installation.

We know of a member here who was trying for badr6 on a CM 1.8m dish, but was struggling, new cost of dish is approx £800 as already said.

Another member http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/members/294826/jambon550192/ managed to get an ex Virgin Media 2.5m dish 2nd hand, and getting badr6 on it. That dish would also get Nilesat 101/102 H and V tps fairly comfortably too.
