I set up the 1.8 for C band exactly by the satellite bible. Focus distance, focus depth, elevation etc but not a whisper on the meter. Re placed the lnb support arms for more stability and accuracy for centering etc, changed the short coax lead, loaded the latest xml files to the Dr HD meter, Done a scan east and west and not a hint. But I will sort and discover it is something so simple only an idiot wouldn't realise it. :-ohcrap

Start on 20E or 40E - both have very strong signals (1m dish with woefully badly set up lnb used here!)

Bolt the Ku LNB in the middle first (strap it into the scalar feed with some tape) just to be sure you have the arc correct.

What meter are you using ?

Try 40.5 West, it has strong signals and is circular polarity so much less emphasis on LNB skew. Also, remember that the LNB throat aperture needs to be positioned closer to the dish than the focal length. The LNB should be positioned so that the focal length of the dish is approximately 9mm to 11mm inside the LNB depending on the beamwidth angle of the dish.

I think the f/d of a Precision 1.8m dish is around 0.36 so check that the flat scalar is correctly located on the LNB, there should be some f/d alignment marks to position the flat scalar.

It might also be worth trying to detect a signal using a satellite receiver and a small TV to see if it picks up anything?

I managed to find an Invacom C120 twin lnb and an old KU feedhorn from the Precision bits. Took out the C band lnb and wedged in the KU lnb with some old strips of towel, lined it up and wedged it tight with bits of clothes pegs. Thought I would aim for 28 east as that is quite forgiving for not being spot on. Altered the elevation down in stages, flicker on the meter, left then down a bit and scanned in 250 channels on the Dr HD 1000s. I will put in the C band lnb tomorrow and see what I get without altering the elevation which looks to about 45 which is about right I think for 51.7 N elevation.

Yes, 51.7 and a gnats wing for your location, 45 degree isn't right for your latitude for 28East reception, 25 degrees is close, though you have got signal which is odd.
20E should be your first port of call once the LNB is swopped over, though 10E should have signal at approximately the same level.

Satsig gives the following.
Latitude = 50.7192, Longitude = -1.8808
Lat = 50 degrees, 43.15 minutes North
Long = 1 degrees, 52.85 minutes West
Ordnance Survey Grid Reference OSGB Grid: SZ 085 911
If you want to point a satellite TV dish at the Satellite at = 28.2 East orbit longitude
beam elevation= 25.4, Azimuth= 145.0 (magnetic compass), Polarisation= -22.3
Polar mounts only: Main angle= 51.4, Downward tilt= 6.7, Motor drive sideways angle= 33.1

I worked it out at 44.7 with the the declamation.
The dish set at 50.7 never picked up a signal.

The highest any satellite can be at your latitude is around 32 degrees (0W) in the UK, so I don't know what has gone wrong with your calculations

I did the settings from the Satsig site as I posted above. Now I will have to go back and try again. At least I know the rest is spot on, pole upright, scaler ring centre, did that with a bit of plastic rainwater down pipe, focal distance and depth. Happy days.

Huh? 44.7 coming from where?

Motor latitude scale would be 51.36, so motor axis elevation scale is 38.64 ("Modified motor angles")
Dish Declination offset is 6.73,
So total dish elevation should be 38.64 - 6.73 = 31.91

I think you confused motor latitude and motor elevation?

Probably but this was part of the problem.
