Hello,
I am thinking of buying a sky box off ebay but there is no viewing card.
At this new property is a working dish on the roof with cables installed by the previous owner.
I do not have an account with sky but my question is if the sky cable is connected to the box will i be able to watch the free channels without a viewing card,i have no need for the fancy channels of which you need to pay for etc.
Box in question is shown below.

Thanks very much.

Yes it will work without a card, but to get your correct region of ITV etc and the extra channels like FIVER/Five US, you will need a Freesat from Sky card at around £20.

Moved to the Sky sub forum as its a Sky box not a Freesat box.

Yes it'll work fine, although you will have the wrong BBC & ITV regions as you dont have a card.

You will probably have BBC London & ITV central West.

No major problem.

You will not have the correct BBC and ITV regions on 101 and 103 but you will certainly be able to get all the FTA Channels without a card.

Edit: SNAP!!

Without the card all channels will be listed although not viewable so you have to flick through them all unless you know the channel numbers

A "Favourites" only EPG is easy to create and access.

Possibly of more importance is that neither OP nor ourselves have mentioned that PVR Recording will not be possible owing to the Sky Tax.

OP asked about viewing, I know, but I don't want him to find out he can't do something he didn't explicitly ask about!

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Buuuuuut, isn't the pictured box just a normal SD digibox? Rather than a sky+ box? So, there'd be no point telling the OP that the box can't do recording without paying a sky+ recording tax when they are buying a non-PVR box... :D

Is it, tried to zoom in, but failed miserably O-no

I'm glad, if I'm wrong (and if you say I am, therefore I must be ) as he will be v.happy. :D

PS: The misquoting of Moody Blues Lyrics was entirely accidental!

You can get the Sky card cheaper if you subscribe to a cheap channel, usually it's a minimum of two months, then cancel it afterwards. You keep the card. there's a few channels, Asia, Sport and XXX that you can do this with.

Hi
I have bought the box and awaiting delivery.
I was told no card is required & viewing all channels will be ok.

I will see what happens.

Without a card Channel 5 will not appear on the EPG and will need to be added and then viewed in "other channels".
