Raspberry Pi and Rune - HiFi Streamer

Having finally given up on my Raumfeld connector 2 music streamer, so I started looking up media streamers.

A few minutes later I can across an article telling me about a raspberry pi img and software called rune.

It runs on a stripped down version of arch Linux, it's not very big about 700mb ish.

So far I have it running on my pi, it's scanning my FreeNAS music shares.

And it seems I can also get decent dac boards for the Pi.

Now if I can also get it to play my internet radio stations, I will be very happy with this combination.

No it's doesn't come with a fancy box, or an expensive price tag. still pricing parts up at the moment as I don't want to keep unplugging my only pi.

I am looking at deals on kits etc, but this definitely seems the way forward :D

Our local charity shop had a Pi kit 'B'- unwanted Christmas present - for £27. Not sure if it is still there though.

I went for the digital out board as I want it to replace my Pioneer N-50 and the Raumfeld connector 2 and plug it in to my maverick D1+.

But you can also swap the digital board for some very good analogue audio outs (for hifi use)

I'm playing with this atm on a Pi model B. I'm impressed with it but find that the volume is too low, whether plugged into the analogue output from the Pi or plugged in to a Fiio USB DAC. Having to have the amp wound up to give a good listening level, I have to remember to turn it down before switching to another source like sat box or CD player (or blow the windows out).
Are you seeing (hearing) the same?

When I tried it, I had it connected via my hdmi output in to my denon av amp and it was fine.

The analogue out via the av cable was very quiet.

The Pi I setup with it is back to normal duties now.

I have ordered another Pi to set up permanently for rune.

Just waiting for the parts to arrive.

It's frustrating. I've been using the Pi with Kodi and found volume to be a problem there too when played through the amplifier and have contemplated building a simple pre-amp to boost the volume.

I have always set the amplification to plus 20 db in kodi, and save as the default settings all videos/music.

Definitely prefer rune now I have the USB volume turned up, and I can hear it properly.

Volume control turned off, it's under mpd.
