Receivers SW updates question

Have a beginner's question: 1) If one only sticks to FTA channels why is there a need to update a RX's SW?

2) Now on the other hand if one is interested in updating k**ys embeded in the RX's firmare (not through CI module): Is every k*y update needs to be preceeded by the RX's firmare SW update?

Can you guys shed some light on this process?

1) if it works ok, there isnt any reason. New official software sometimes gives new features, and always updates the transponder databases.

2) No Many times you can just put the new keys in using the rcu. A firmware update will be needed if the encryption is tweaked to stop pirated watching.
